SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

NELSON <strong>of</strong> Hilborough, Norfolk and Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, and later <strong>of</strong> Merton Place, (also called Merton Grove).<br />

Horatio Nelson, the famous admiral, (d.Oct 21, 1805), son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Edmund Nelson, Rector <strong>of</strong> Hilborough and Burnham Thorpe, son <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Rev. Edmund Nelson, (d.Oct 23, 1747), Rector <strong>of</strong> Hilborough, son <strong>of</strong> William Nelson <strong>of</strong> Little Dunham, Norfolk, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Edmund Nelson <strong>of</strong><br />

Wendling, Norfolk, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Nelson, (d.1654), <strong>of</strong> London and King's Lynn, Norfolk, was created Baron Nelson <strong>of</strong> the Nile and <strong>of</strong><br />

Burnham Thorpe, Nov 6, 1798; Viscount Nelson <strong>of</strong> the Nile and <strong>of</strong> Burnham Thorpe, May 22, 1801; and with remainder to the male heirs <strong>of</strong> his<br />

father and failing such to the male heirs <strong>of</strong> his sister Susannah, wife <strong>of</strong> Thomas Bolton <strong>of</strong> Wells, Norfolk, Baron Nelson <strong>of</strong> the Nile and <strong>of</strong><br />

Hilborough, Aug 18, 1801; and was recognised as Duke <strong>of</strong> Bronte in Sicily, Sep 1801.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: His original coat was : Or a cross patonce Sable over all a bend Gules. After the battle <strong>of</strong> the Nile a bend engrailed Or<br />

charged with three bombs fired Proper was superimposed upon the bend, and a chief wavy was added charged with waves <strong>of</strong> the sea from which<br />

issue a palm-tree between a disabled ship on the dexter and a battery in ruins on the sinister side all Proper<br />

Crests: On a naval crown Or the chelengk or plume <strong>of</strong> triumph presented to Horatio, Viscount Nelson, by the the Sultan, Selim III.<br />

Upon waves <strong>of</strong> the sea the stern <strong>of</strong> a Spanish man-<strong>of</strong>-war thereon inscribed 'San Josef' all Proper, and over it the Motto, Faith and Works.<br />

Supporters: On the dexter a sailor armed with a cutlass and a pair <strong>of</strong> pistols in his belt Proper the right hand supporting a staff thereon<br />

hoisted a commodore's flag [Argent] and in his left hand a palm branch Proper. On the sinister A lion rampant regardant in his mouth two broken<br />

flagstaffs Proper flowing from one a Spanish flag Or and Gules and from the other a French tricolour, and in his dexter paw a palm branch<br />

Proper.<br />

Nelson was succeeded by his elder brother William, (dsp Feb 28, 1835), who was created, with remainder to the male heirs <strong>of</strong> his sister<br />

Susannah, Viscount Merton <strong>of</strong> Trafalgar and Merton and Earl Nelson <strong>of</strong> Trafalgar and Merton, Nov 20, 1805. On his death, his nephew, Thomas<br />

Bolton succeeded as 2 nd Earl and took the name and <strong>Arms</strong> <strong>of</strong> Nelson. *<br />

NELSON-WARD The Rev. Horatio Nelson Nelson-Ward, BA (Cantab), Rector <strong>of</strong> Radstock, Somerset, (1822-88), son <strong>of</strong> the Rev.<br />

Philip Ward, MA (Oxon), (1795-1859), and his wife Horatia Nelson, (d.1881), natural daughter <strong>of</strong> Admiral Viscount Nelson by Emma, Lady<br />

Hamilton, had issue, amongst others, besides a 3 rd son the Rev. Hugh Herbert Edward Nelson-Ward, MA (Oxon), (b.1863), Rector <strong>of</strong> Newdigate,<br />

1899-1906, a 2 nd son Marmaduke Philip Blandy Nelson-Ward <strong>of</strong> Uruguay, (1860-1924), who was father <strong>of</strong> Marmaduke Philip Workley Nelson-<br />

Ward <strong>of</strong> 235 Molesey Road, Hersham, (b.1892).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Azure a cross flory between four lions passant guardant Or (Ward); 2 and 3, Or a cross flory Sable a chief<br />

Gules thereon a fess engrailed <strong>of</strong> the field charged with three bombs fired Proper (Nelson).<br />

Crests: 1, A wolf's head erased Or gorged with a collar Sable thereon three bezants and charged on the neck with a trivet <strong>of</strong> the<br />

second (Ward); 2, Upon waves <strong>of</strong> the sea the stern <strong>of</strong> a man-<strong>of</strong>-war Proper thereon inscribed "Victory" in letters Gules (Nelson).<br />

Motto: Sub cruce salus. (BLG17)<br />

NEVILL(E) Lord Bergavenny. Edward Neville, Lord Bergavenny, (d.1476), acquired the manors <strong>of</strong> Abinger and east<br />

Betchworth by marriage to Elizabeth, (1415-48), daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Richard Beauchamp. Their descendant Henry, Lord Bergavenny, (d.1641),<br />

sold them, 1629. (VCHS iii 133, 167)<br />

Of the same family, the Rev. and Hon. George Henry Nevill <strong>of</strong> Flower Place, <strong>Surrey</strong>, (1760-1844), was 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> George, 17 th Baron<br />

Bergavenny, 1 st Viscount Nevill and 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Abergavenny, (1727-85).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules on a saltire Argent a rose <strong>of</strong> the field barbed and seeded Proper.<br />

Crest: A bull statant Argent pied Sable collared and chain reflexed over the back Or.<br />

NEVILLE Earl <strong>of</strong> Westmorland. Sir John Neville, (dvp 1420), elder son <strong>of</strong> Ralph, 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Westmorland, (c.1364-1425),<br />

acquired Long Ditton by marriage to Elizabeth, (d.1423), sister and coheir <strong>of</strong> Edmund de Holand, 4 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Kent, (1383-1408). Their<br />

descendant Henry, 5 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Westmorland, (d.1563), sold it 1559. (VCHS iii 520)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a saltire Argent.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or a bull’s head Sable armed Or.<br />

Supporters: Two pied bulls armed unguled collared and chained Or.<br />

NEWALL Samuel Newall <strong>of</strong> Richmond, (1817-1900), was father <strong>of</strong> George William Newall <strong>of</strong> 17 Ranelagh Avenue, Barnes, (b.1859).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules within two chevronels Or between three fountains seven annulets interlaced chevronwise Argent.<br />

Crest: Two storks’ heads addorsed proper.<br />

NEWALL Baron Newall. Marshal <strong>of</strong> the RAF Sir Cyril Louis Norton Newall, GCB, OM, GCMG, CBE, <strong>of</strong> Walton<br />

Leigh, Addlestone, (1886-1963), was created Baron Newall <strong>of</strong> Clifton-upon-Dunsmoor, Warwickshire, 1946.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Azure and Gules two lions passanr guardant in pale Or on a chief Ermine a rose <strong>of</strong> the second barbed and seeded<br />

between a lotus flower and a sprig <strong>of</strong> New Zealand fern all Proper.<br />

Crest: Issuant from an astral crown Or an eagle wings elevated Sable breathing flames Proper.<br />

Supporters: On either side a Pegasus Argent gorged with an astral crown Or.<br />

NEWBERY Lieutenant-Colonel George Newbery <strong>of</strong> 36 Brunswick Square, Hove, (c.1790-1854), was born in Croydon and was on half<br />

pay in 1851. His wife, Anna Maria, (d.1857 aged 56), was born at Farrington, Hampshire.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: (On Colonel and Mrs Newbery's tomb in St. Andrew's churchyard, Hove, but now almost illegible) .... three bends .....; on an<br />

escutcheon <strong>of</strong> pretence, ...., (indecipherable).<br />
