SMITH <strong>of</strong> Badwell Ash, Suffolk, <strong>of</strong> Hunston, Suffolk, <strong>of</strong> Ashfield Hall, Suffolk, and <strong>of</strong> Chertsey.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable a cross Or.<br />

Crest: A greyhound couchant Or collared and lined Sable.<br />

As borne (SV1623) by Thomas Smith <strong>of</strong> Chertsey, Robert Smith <strong>of</strong> London, leather-seller, and John Smith <strong>of</strong> Ashfield Hall, sons <strong>of</strong> Robert<br />

Smith <strong>of</strong> Badwell Ash, (whose brother Thomas was <strong>of</strong> Ashfield), son <strong>of</strong> Robert Smith alias Hovell <strong>of</strong> Badwell Ash, whose 3 rd son, John Smith,<br />

was <strong>of</strong> Ashfield, and whose 4 th son, Arthur Smith, was <strong>of</strong> Hunston.<br />

SMITH <strong>of</strong> Merrow and <strong>of</strong> Rake House in Witley from 1614 to 1675 and afterwards <strong>of</strong> Milford House. Ext.1764.<br />

Descended from Henry Smith <strong>of</strong> Rake, living 1623, 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> Anthony Smith <strong>of</strong> Merrow, a native <strong>of</strong> Yorkshire.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a bend between two unicorn heads erased Azure three lozenges Or, a mullet for difference.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Gules a demi-bull rampant Argent charged with a mullet for difference.<br />

From armorial glass in Rake House, and as borne (SV1623) by Anthony Smith, (d.1637), <strong>of</strong> Rake, one <strong>of</strong> the Clerks <strong>of</strong> the Spicery to James I.<br />

Anthony Smith, (d.Oct 6, 1669), obtained a confirmation <strong>of</strong> this coat, Jun 29, 1667, with permission to omit the mullet and the lozenges.<br />

This last coat, with an unicorn issuing from a ducal coronet for crest, appears in armorial glass at Rake House. (SAC xviii 54)<br />

Thomas Smith, Mayor <strong>of</strong> Guildford, 1658 and 1687, son <strong>of</strong> Henry Smith, Mayor <strong>of</strong> Guildford, 1627, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Smith, Mayor <strong>of</strong> Guildford,<br />

1587 and 1595, eldest son <strong>of</strong> Anthony Smith <strong>of</strong> Merrow, represented the elder line <strong>of</strong> this family, and bore the 1623 Visitataion coat and crest<br />

without the mullet. The Rev. Dr Richard Smith <strong>of</strong> Shere, son <strong>of</strong> John Smith <strong>of</strong> Merrow, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Anthony Smith <strong>of</strong> Merrow, bore them with a<br />

crescent for difference<br />

SMITH <strong>of</strong> Merton Abbey.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Erminois three besants.<br />

Crest: A demi-wild man Proper in his right hand five ears <strong>of</strong> barley Vert and in his left a flint stone Proper his hair Sable wreathed<br />

round the temples Proper.<br />

As borne (SV1623) by George and Thomas Smith, both <strong>of</strong> Mitcham, sons <strong>of</strong> Thomas Smith <strong>of</strong> Mitcham.<br />

As borne (SV1623) by William Smith <strong>of</strong> Ryall in Pepperharrow, and by Richard Smith <strong>of</strong> Pepperharrow, sons <strong>of</strong> Henry Smith <strong>of</strong> Pepperharrow<br />

Park, (d.May 12, 1626), son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Smith <strong>of</strong> London, son <strong>of</strong> Christopher Smith <strong>of</strong> Hackthorpe, Lincolnshire. But the brass in Pepperharrow<br />

Church to Henry Smith, (d.1626), gives the arms <strong>of</strong> Smith <strong>of</strong> Westenhanger, Kent i.e .Azure a chevron engrailed between three lions passant<br />

gardant Or, a crescent for difference.<br />

Crest: A leopard face Or. (SAC xxxi 113)<br />

SMITH <strong>of</strong> St. Saviour's, Southwark.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable a fess Erminois cottised Or between three martlets <strong>of</strong> the last each charged with an ermine spot.<br />

Crest: A greyhound sejant Gules collared and with a line reflexed over the back Or, charged on the shoulder with a mascle Argent.<br />

As borne by Henry Smith, (d.Jan 23, 1627), citizen, salter and Alderman <strong>of</strong> London, a benefactor by his will <strong>of</strong> most <strong>Surrey</strong> parishes, the son <strong>of</strong><br />

Walter Smith <strong>of</strong> Gloucester and Wandsworth, 6 th son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Smith <strong>of</strong> Campden, Gloucestershire.<br />

Henry Smith, however, sealed with A fess between three fleur-de-lys on occasion. (HG ii 78, 80)<br />

SMITH <strong>of</strong> Southwark.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a lion passant Sable.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm in armour embowed grasping the haft <strong>of</strong> a broken tilting spear Argent.<br />

As borne by Robert Smith <strong>of</strong> Southwark, son <strong>of</strong> John Smith <strong>of</strong> Sudbury, Suffolk (SV1623).<br />
