POOLE Major Henry Raynolde Poole, DSO, OBE, RA, <strong>of</strong> Red Eaves, Chilworth, (b.1877), son <strong>of</strong> Henry Skeffington Poole, MA,<br />

FGS, <strong>of</strong> Halifax, Nova Scotia, Chief Inspector <strong>of</strong> Mines, (1844-1917).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure semé-de-lys Or a lion rampant Argent.<br />

Crest: Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or a griffin's head Azure beaked and eared <strong>of</strong> the first.<br />

PORTAL William Richard Portal, MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> Tonge House, West Norwood, (b.1838), eldest son <strong>of</strong> Richard Brinsley Portal <strong>of</strong><br />

Tonge House, (1808-1900), and grandson <strong>of</strong> Richard Brinsley Portal <strong>of</strong> Daventry, Northamptonshire, (1784-1859).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a lion rampant Sable between a fleur-de-lys on the dexter Azure and on the sinister a rose Gules barbed and seeded<br />

Proper on a chief <strong>of</strong> the second six mullets <strong>of</strong> as many points, three and three, Or.<br />

Crest: Upon a castellated portal flanked by two towers Proper a fleur-de-lys Or and on each tower a rose as in the arms.<br />

PORTER <strong>of</strong> Allfarthing. Endymion Porter, (d,1649), obtained a grant <strong>of</strong> the manor <strong>of</strong> Allfarthing in Wandsworth, 1628. He<br />

suffered great losses in the Royal cause and the family was forced to sell the manor in 1652, but it was recovered by his son George Porter,<br />

(d.1683). His descendant John Porter <strong>of</strong> Allfarthing, married, 1771, Mary, eldest daughter <strong>of</strong> Cosmo Nevill, but died sp when Allfarthing passed<br />

to his sister's son Pierce Walsh, (d.1809), who assumed the surname Porter; His son Pierce Walsh Porter sold the manor 1811. (VCHS iv 112)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable three bells Argent a canton Ermine. (BGA)<br />

PORTER Sir George Swinburne Porter, 3 rd and last Bart., (1908-74), was at one time <strong>of</strong> The Laurels, Frimley.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable on a fess Or between three church bells Argent a trefoil slipped Proper between two annulets Gules.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> two cross crosslets fitché saltireways Or a cherub Proper.<br />

PORTMAN Houses at Kew were owned by Sir Hugh Portman, (d.1604), and passed to his brother Sir John Portman, 1 st Bart., (d.1612),<br />

whose 3 rd son Sir Hugh Portman, 4 th Bart., (d. unmarried 1632), eventually succeeded.<br />

PORTMAN Brigadier Guy Maurice Berkeley Portman, CB, TD, DL <strong>of</strong> Hangerfield, Witley, (1890-1961), was son <strong>of</strong> Commander<br />

Maurice William Portman, RN, (1858-1915), and was descended from the 1 st Viscount Portman, (1799-1888).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Or a fleur-de-lys Azure (Portman); 2 and 3, Gules a chevron Ermine between ten crosses pattée Argent,<br />

six and four, (Berkeley).<br />

Crest: 1, A talbot sejant Or (Portman); 2, An unicorn passant Gules armed and crined Or (Berkeley).<br />

Motto: A clean heart and a cheerful spirit. (BP105)<br />

PORTMORE Baron and Earl <strong>of</strong> see COLYEAR<br />

POTTINGER Sir Henry Pottinger, 3 rd and last Bart., DL, JP, BA (Oxon), (1834-1909), was <strong>of</strong> The Pines, Queen's Road, Richmond.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Vert an eastern crown Or between three pelicans feeding their young Proper a canton Argent charged with a cross Gules.<br />

Crest: A dexter arm embowed in armour Proper garnished Or the hand gauntleted and grasping a sword also Proper hilt and<br />

pommel Gold the arm encircled by an eastern crown Gules.<br />
