RUSSELL Admiral the Hon. Sir Guy Herbrand Edward Russell, GBE, KCB, DSO, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> the 2 nd Baron Ampthill, was <strong>of</strong> The Old<br />
Vicarage, Shamley Green, in 1970.<br />

RUSSELL Baron Howland <strong>of</strong> Streatham. Duke <strong>of</strong> Bedford. The Russell family acquired Tooting Bec, Streatham, by the<br />
marriage, 1695, <strong>of</strong> Sir Wriothesley Russell, KG, later 2 nd Duke <strong>of</strong> Bedford, (1680-1711), to Elizabeth, (d.1724 aged 42), daughter and heir <strong>of</strong><br />
John Howland <strong>of</strong> Streatham, and in 1695 his grandfather, William Russell, 5 th Earl and 1 st Duke <strong>of</strong> Bedford, (1613-1700) was created Baron<br />
Howland <strong>of</strong> Streatham; the title is now held by his descendant, the 13 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Bedford. Of the same family, Anthony Arthur Russell <strong>of</strong> The<br />
Ridgeway, Shere, (b.1904), son <strong>of</strong> Harold John Hastings Russell <strong>of</strong> The Ridgeway, (1868-1926), and descended from the 6 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Bedford.<br />

(1832-1900), a Lord <strong>of</strong> Appeal in Ordinary, was created a Life Peer as Baron Russell <strong>of</strong> Killowen, Co. Down, 1894. His 4 th son the Hon. Frank<br />
Russell, PC, KC, <strong>of</strong> Lane End, Walton Heath, (1867-1946), also a Lord <strong>of</strong> Appeal in Ordinary, was similarly created a Life Peer as Baron<br />
Russell <strong>of</strong> Killowen, Co. Down, The 1 st Lord Russell <strong>of</strong> Killowen had a 3 rd son the Hon. Cyril Russell, BA (Oxon), (1865-1920), who was father<br />
<strong>of</strong>, amongst others, Major Denis Leslie Russell, MBE, TD, BA (Oxon), RA, <strong>of</strong> Burdenshot House, Burdenshot Hill, Guildford, (b.1909) and<br />
Lieutenant-Colonel Cyril Alan Russell, <strong>of</strong> Quaves Corner, Sutton Green, {Woking}, (b.1910).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a lion rampant Gules on a chief Sable three escallops <strong>of</strong> the field the whole within a bordure engrailed Vert.<br />
Crest: A goat passant Argent armed Or charged on the body with three trefoils slipped fesswise Vert.<br />

RUSSELL Baron Russell <strong>of</strong> Liverpool. Edward Frederick Langley Russell, 2 nd Baron Russell <strong>of</strong> Liverpool, CBE, MC, <strong>of</strong> 50<br />
Marryat Road, Wimbledon Common, (1895-1981), succeeded his grandfather, the 1 st Baron, on the latter's death 1920, and was himself<br />
succeeded by his grandson Simon Gordon Jared, 3 rd Baron Russell <strong>of</strong> Liverpool, MC, (b.1952).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Per saltire Sable and Or in chief an estoile Argent two roses in fess Gules barbed and seeded Proper and in base a thistle<br />
leaved and slipped <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />
Crest: An owl wings expanded Argent beaked and legged Or resting the dexter claw on an estoile Azure.<br />

RUTTER Sir Frederick William Pascoe Rutter <strong>of</strong> Coombe Ridge House, Kingston Hill (1859-1949), son <strong>of</strong> William Roger Pascoe<br />
Rutter <strong>of</strong> Liverpool, was Governor <strong>of</strong> the London and Lancashire Insurance Company and Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Law Union and Rock Insurance<br />
Company and <strong>of</strong> the Standard Marine Insurance Company. He was President <strong>of</strong> the Insurance Institute <strong>of</strong> Great Britain and Ireland, 1910-11, and<br />
was knighted 1934.<br />
