SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

PERCEVAL Sir Westby Brook Perceval, KCMG, <strong>of</strong> Southdown, Wimbledon, formerly <strong>of</strong> Christchurch, New Zealand, barrister-at-law,<br />

(1854-1928), was son <strong>of</strong> Westby Hawkshaw Perceval <strong>of</strong> Knightsbrook, Co. Meath, and <strong>of</strong> New Zealand, (1821-72).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Sable a horse passant Argent spancelled Gules (Perceval); 2, Sable a chevron Ermine between three<br />

mullets Argent (Perceval); 3, Argent a chevron Gules on a canton <strong>of</strong> the last a spur leathered rowel downwards Or (Knight).<br />

Crest: A horse as in the arms.<br />

Motto: Per se valens. (BLG17)<br />

PERCEVAL Earl <strong>of</strong> Egmont. (DPB1868) records North House, Epsom, as one <strong>of</strong> the seats <strong>of</strong> Admiral Sir George James<br />

Perceval, 6 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Egmont, (1794-1874), MP for West <strong>Surrey</strong>, 1837-40.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Argent on a chief indented Gules three crosses pattée <strong>of</strong> the field (Perceval); 2 and 3, Barry nebuly <strong>of</strong> six<br />

Or and Gules (Lovel).<br />

Crest: A thistle erect leaved Proper.<br />

Supporters: Dexter, An antelope Argent armed unguled ducally collared and chained Or; Sinister, A stag Sable attired unguled ducally<br />

PERCIVAL Stanley Percival <strong>of</strong> The Hermitage, St. John's, Woking, (1820-1902), grandson <strong>of</strong> Thomas Percival, MD, FRS, <strong>of</strong><br />

Manchester, (1740-1804), by his wife Elizabeth, (d.1822), daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel Bassnett <strong>of</strong> New Broad Street, London, was<br />

grandfather <strong>of</strong> Stanley Thomas Bassnett Percival <strong>of</strong> Thelwall, Rowledge, Farnham, (b.1908).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Sable a horse Argent spancelled on near side Gules (Percival); 2 and 3, Azure a chevron per chevron and<br />

per pale Or and Gules between three helmets close Proper (Bassnett).<br />

Crest: Two stags' heads erased addorsed attired Or.<br />

PERCY Duke <strong>of</strong> Northumberland. The Percy family acquired the manor <strong>of</strong> Albury by the marriage, 1845, <strong>of</strong> Algernon George<br />

Percy, 6 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Northumberland, (1810-99), to Louisa, (d.1890), daughter and coheir <strong>of</strong> Henry Drummond. It has descended to Sir Hugh<br />

Algernon Percy, KG, TD, 10 th and present Duke <strong>of</strong> Northumberland <strong>of</strong> Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, and <strong>of</strong> Albury Park. (VCHS)<br />

PERRING Sir Ralph Edgar Perring, 1 st Bart., <strong>of</strong> Frensham Manor and <strong>of</strong> Burghley House, Wimbledon, (b.1905), 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Colonel Sir<br />

John Ernest Perring, DL, JP, (1870-1948), was created Baronet, 1903. His son and heir, John Raymond Perring, TD, (b.1931), is <strong>of</strong> 21 Somerset<br />

Road, Wimbledon.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a pile barry wavy <strong>of</strong> eight Azure and <strong>of</strong> the field between two walnut trees eradicated Proper a lion rampant Gules.<br />

Crest: Upon the trunk <strong>of</strong> a walnut tree fesswise with two branches sprouting therefrom Proper a sword erect Or.<br />

(1870-1948), son <strong>of</strong> Henry Perring <strong>of</strong> Willesden, was a member <strong>of</strong> the London <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong>, Chairman <strong>of</strong> Justices, Wandsworth and Battersea<br />

Division and a Past Master <strong>of</strong> the Worshipful Company <strong>of</strong> Tin Plate Workers.<br />
