SOMERS <strong>of</strong> Clifton in Severn Stoke, Worcestershire, and White-Ladies in Worcester, Worcestershire, and after 1697 <strong>of</strong> Reigate Priory<br />

and Brockmans in North Mimms, Hertfordshire. Baron Somers <strong>of</strong> Evesham, Dec 22, 1697. Extinct 1716.<br />

The most famous member <strong>of</strong> this family was the statesman, John Somers, Baron Somers, (d.Apr 26, 1716), Lord High Chancellor <strong>of</strong> England<br />

and leader <strong>of</strong> the Whigs, Son <strong>of</strong> John Somers <strong>of</strong> White-Ladies, attorney, son <strong>of</strong> Richard Somers, son <strong>of</strong> John Somers, 1589, both <strong>of</strong> Clifton and<br />

White-Ladies.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, Vert and Gules a daunce Ermine, in chief a lion passant between two martlets Argent. (Grazebrook ii 535)<br />

Baron Somers, however, used: Vert a daunce Ermine. (Ibid and MB i 286)<br />

Crest: A coat <strong>of</strong> mail hanging on a laurel tree all Proper, branches issuing from the arms.<br />

SOMERSET Charles Somerset, 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Worcester, (d.1526), who was granted lands at Kew in 1517, (VCHS iii 482), was ancestor <strong>of</strong><br />

Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Somerset, KCB, KH, <strong>of</strong> Roehampton Lodge, (1794-1862), son <strong>of</strong> General Lord Charles Henry Somerset, (1767-<br />

1831), and grandson <strong>of</strong> the 5 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Beaufort. Colonel Fitzroy Molyneux Henry Somerset, RE, <strong>of</strong> The Priory, Frimley, (1823-1901), was 3 rd<br />

son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Lord William George Henry Somerset, (1784-1851), and was also grandson <strong>of</strong> the 5 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Beaufort. Henry Charles Somers<br />

Augustus Somerset, OBE, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> The Priory, Reigate, (1874-1945), was son <strong>of</strong> Lord Henry Richard Charles Somerset, PC, DL, JP, (1849-<br />

1932), and grandson <strong>of</strong> the 8 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Beaufort. The above named Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Somerset, (1794-1862) was grandfather <strong>of</strong><br />

Brigadier-General Charles Wyndham Somerset, CB, CMG, MVO, IA, <strong>of</strong> Edgecote, Richmond Hill, (1862-1938).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Azure three fleurs-de-lys Or; 2 and 3, Gules three lions passant guardant in pale Or; all within a bordure<br />

compony Argent and Azure.<br />

Crest: A portcullis Or nailed Azure with chains pendent thereto Gold.<br />

SONDES <strong>of</strong> Sondes Place in Dorking and after 1475 <strong>of</strong> Throwley, Kent. Baron Sondes <strong>of</strong> Throwley, Viscount Sondes and Earl <strong>of</strong><br />

Feversham, Apr 8, 1676. Extinct 1677.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent three Moor heads in pr<strong>of</strong>ile couped between two chevrons Sable.<br />

Crest: A Moor head in pr<strong>of</strong>ile couped Proper.<br />

Supporters: Two Moors Proper, their heads encircled with chaplets <strong>of</strong> roses Gules and their waists with scarves Argent fringed Or, each<br />

holding in the exterior hand a long dart point downwards and resting on the outward foot. (Doyle i 745)<br />

SOPER William Garland Soper, JP, BA (London), <strong>of</strong> Harestone, Caterham, and <strong>of</strong> London, (b.1837), son <strong>of</strong> William Soper, <strong>of</strong><br />

Plymouth, was a <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong>lor for <strong>Surrey</strong>.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Or and Gules on a saltire between sixteen billets a trefoil slipped all counterchanged; on an escutcheon <strong>of</strong> pretence<br />

Argent a lion rampant reguardant Pean between four mullets <strong>of</strong> six points in cross Azure (Davis). *<br />

Crest: A demi lion per pale Or and Gules holding in the mouth a trefoil slipped Vert and supporting a torch erect fired Proper.<br />

Descended from John Southcote, (d.Apr 18, 1585), <strong>of</strong> Witham and Albery, a Justice <strong>of</strong> the Queen’s Bench, son <strong>of</strong> William Southcote, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong><br />

Nicholas Southcote <strong>of</strong> Soutcote in Winkleigh, Devon.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a chevron Gules between three coots Sable. (MB ii 260)<br />

SOUTHCOTE <strong>of</strong> Woburn Farm in Chertsey.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a chevron Gules getween three coots Sable.<br />

As borne by Philip Soutcote, (d.1758), a cadet <strong>of</strong> Soutchote <strong>of</strong> Albery in Merstham.<br />

Crest: An oak tree Proper fructed and dimidiating a garb Or both banded wavy per fess wavy Argent and Azure.<br />

Supporters: Dexter, An Elizabethan player habited as for the role <strong>of</strong> Hamlet holding a skull in the exterior hand; Sinister, A youth habited<br />

in early fifteenth century dress; all Proper.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent eleven fusils conjoined, seven in pale fesswise, four in fess palewise, and in the dexter chief a mitre all Gules.<br />

Granted 1905. (CCH). (VCHS iv 153) records: Argent a cross indented Gules in the dexter quarter a mitre <strong>of</strong> the last.<br />
