SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

LARPENT post DE HOCHEPIED-LARPENT John Larpent <strong>of</strong> East Sheen, (1741-1824), was father, by his 1 st wife, <strong>of</strong> Francis Seymour<br />

Larpent, <strong>of</strong> Holmwood House, (1776-1845), and by his 2 nd wife, <strong>of</strong> John James de Hochepied-Larpent, 7 th Baron de Hochepied, (1783-1860),<br />

and Sir George Gerard de Hochepied-Larpent, <strong>of</strong> Roehampton, (1786-1855), who was created Baronet, 1841. The baronetcy became extinct on<br />

the death, (sp 1899), <strong>of</strong> his grandson Sir George Albert de Hockepied-Larpent, 3 rd and last Bart.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Gules a saltire Or between four plates each charged with a hurt on a chief Ermine a fleur-de-lys Azure<br />

(Larpent); 2 and 3, Per pale Argent and Azure on the dexter a chevron Gules between three crescents Sable, and on the sinister a dexter hand<br />

expanded issuant from the sinister in bend and beneath a pair <strong>of</strong> manacles the chains broken Proper (de Hochepied).<br />

Crests: 1, A unicorn's head Argent crined Or the neck charged with a fleur-de-lys and beneath four annulets conjoined Azure<br />

(Larpent); 2, Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or a crescent Sable; 3, Out <strong>of</strong> a ducal coronet Or a dexter hand issuant Proper (both for de Hochepied).<br />

LATHAM Sir Thomas Paul Latham, 1 st Bart., <strong>of</strong> Crow Clump, Walton-upon-Thames, (1855-1931), was created Baronet, 1919. The<br />

present holder <strong>of</strong> the title is his grandson Sir Richard Thomas Paul Latham, 3 rd Bart., MA (Cantab), (b.1934).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules an eagle displayed Or between two bezants in fess on a chief <strong>of</strong> the second a cross moline Sable between two roses <strong>of</strong><br />

the field.<br />

Crest: An eagle wings elevate inverted and addorsed Or resting the dexter claw on a torteau and charged on the wing with a cross as<br />

in the arms.<br />

LATHAM Fairbairn records Latham <strong>of</strong> The Priory, Frensham, as using for<br />

LATIMER William le Latimer, (d.1327), acquired the manor <strong>of</strong> Wotton which his descendant William le Latimer, (d.1381), left to his<br />

cousin Sir Thomas de Camoys, qv. (VCHS iii 156)<br />

LA TOUCHE Michael Cotton Digges La Touche, FICE, <strong>of</strong> 4 Hollingworth Road, Croydon, (b.1931), son <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-Commander<br />

Alexander Digges La Touche, FRCS, RN, (b.1899), and descended from David Digues de la Touche, Monsieur des Rompures, (1671-1745), a<br />

noble Huguenot who settled in Dublin. *<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a pomegranate slipped in pale Proper on a chief Gules two mullets <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: A mullet Or.<br />

LATTON <strong>of</strong> Latton, Wiltshire, then <strong>of</strong> Kingston Bagpuize, Berkshire, and after 1670 <strong>of</strong> Esher Place and Burwood Park in Walton-on-<br />

Thames. Extinct 1727. **<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Argent and Sable a saltire engrailed counterchanged Ermines and Ermine.<br />

Crests: 1, Between two vine branches Vert a doe head couped Azure charged on the neck with three roses Gules between two bars<br />

LAUD The arms <strong>of</strong> Archbishop William Laud, (1573-1645), are in the Chapel and the Banqueting Hall <strong>of</strong> the Archbishop's Palace,<br />

LAURIE, olim BAYLEY The Rev. Sir John Robert Laurie Emilius Laurie, olim Bayley, 3 rd Bart. (1823-1917), who assumed the surname<br />

Laurie, 1887, on succeeding to Maxwelton, was at one time <strong>of</strong> The Lodge, Shere. (EXH)<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Sable a cup Argent with a garland between two laurel branches all issuing out <strong>of</strong> the same Vert (Laurie);<br />

2 and 3, Quarterly Gules and Erminois on a fess Azure three martlets Or in the first and fourth quarters a lion rampant Argent (Bayley).<br />

Crest: Two branches <strong>of</strong> laurel in saltire Proper.<br />

Motto: Virtus semper viridis. (FD7)<br />

LAW William Thomas Law, MD (Edinburgh), FRCS, <strong>of</strong> Ripley Court, (1845-1910), was son <strong>of</strong> Henry Compton Law, <strong>of</strong><br />

Allington, (1815-70).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per bend Or and Ermine a cock Gules.<br />

Crest: A cock Gules.<br />
