SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

LUMLEY (VCHS iv 196) records Sir John Lumley, Baron Lumley, (dsp 1609), as inheriting the manor <strong>of</strong> Cheam from his father-inlaw,<br />

the Earl <strong>of</strong> Arundel.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: VCHS gives these as: Or a fess Gules between three parrots Vert collared Gules. (VCHS iv 198) also records the arms on<br />

Lord Lumley's monument in Cheam Church as: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Lumley; 2 and 3, Gules six martlets [or popinjays] Argent, (Old Lumley).<br />

Crest: A pelican.<br />

Supporters: Two popinjays.<br />

VCHS adds that sixteen other shields on the monument shew the Lumley descent, viz, (1) Old Lumley, impaling, A saltire [for Algitha, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Aldred, Earl <strong>of</strong> Northumbria]; (2) Old Lumley, impaling a blank shield; (3) and (4) as (2); (5) Old Lumley, impaling [Sable] three [covered]<br />

cups [Argent, (de Audre)]; (6) Old Lumley, impaling, A saltire Vair, (Wallington) [correctly, Gules a saltire vairy Sable and Argent, (Morwick)];<br />

(7) Old Lumley, impaling Thweng [ie New Lumley]; (8) to (16) New Lumley, impaling, Holland [Azure fleuretté and a lion rampant guardant<br />

Argent], Neville [Gules a saltire Argent], Reedham [correctly, Redman, Gules a chevron engrailed Argent between three cushions, or garbs,<br />

Ermine; Surtees, however, recorded: . three garbs ., (SHD)], Harington [Sable fretty Argent], Thornton [Sable a chevron and a chief indented<br />

Argent], Edward IV [correctly, Elizabeth, natural daughter <strong>of</strong> King Edward IV, viz. Quarterly, 1, Quarterly France Modern and England; 2 and 3,<br />

Or a cross Gules, (de Burgh); 4, Barry <strong>of</strong> six Or and Azure on a chief <strong>of</strong> the first three pallets between two base esquires <strong>of</strong> the second over all an<br />

inescutcheon Argent, (Mortimer); overall a bend sinister ], Conyers [Azure a maunch Or], Scrope [Azure a bend Or], and Knightley [Quarterly, 1<br />

and 4, Ermine; 2 and 3, Paly <strong>of</strong> six Or and Gules].<br />

LUMLEY-SAVILE The Hon. Henry Leoline Thornhill Lumley-Savile, (b.1923), younger son <strong>of</strong> the 2 nd Baron Savile, (1853-1931), and<br />

heir presumptive to the Barony, was formerly <strong>of</strong> North Close, Virginia Water.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a bend Sable three owls affronté <strong>of</strong> the first within a bordure wavy <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Crest: An owl affronté Argent debruised by a bend sinister wavy Sable.<br />

Motto: Bee fast. (BP99)<br />

LUSHER <strong>of</strong> Shoelands in Puttenham, until about 1620.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules three martlets Or, on a chief <strong>of</strong> the second as many mullets Azure.<br />

LUSHINGTON Sir Stephen Lushington, 1 st Bart., (d.1807), had issue, amongst others, an eldest son Sir Henry Lushington, 2 nd Bart., (1775-<br />

1863), father <strong>of</strong>, amongst others, the Rev. Charles Lushington, MA, Vicar <strong>of</strong> Walton-on-Thames, (b.1805); and a 2 nd son the Rt. Hon. Stephen<br />

Lushington, (1782-1873), who was father <strong>of</strong>, amongst others, Edward Harbord Lushington, JP, <strong>of</strong> Brackenhurst, Cobham, Bengal CS, (1822-<br />

1904), and Vernon Lushington, KC, <strong>of</strong> Pyports, Cobham, (1832-1912), Secretary to the Admiralty, 1869-77, and Judge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>County</strong> Courts for<br />

<strong>Surrey</strong> and Berkshire, 1877-1900. The said Edward Harbord Lushington had issue, amongst others, Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Eardley<br />

Lushington, 8 th Hussars, <strong>of</strong> St. Anne's, Camberley, (b.1850), and Brigadier-General Stephen Lushington, CB, CMG, RFA, <strong>of</strong> Woodlea,<br />

Rowledge, Farnham, (b.1864).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Or on a fess wavy between three lions' heads erased Vert langued Gules as many ermine spots Gold<br />

(Lushington); 2 and 3, Sable a chevron between three pelicans' heads erased Or picking their breasts Proper.<br />

Crest: A lion's head erased Vert ducally gorged Argent on the erasure three ermine spots Or.<br />

LUTTRELL OLMIUS Earl <strong>of</strong> Carhampton. Extinct 1829. .<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per fess Azure and Argent a fess counter embattled Or in chief a mullet <strong>of</strong> six points <strong>of</strong> the second and in base on a mount<br />

Vert an elm tree Proper.<br />

Crest: A demi-moor habited in armour Proper, garnished Or between two laurel branches Vert with a wreath round the temples<br />

Argent and Gules and on his breast a fess as in the arms.<br />

Supporters: Dexter: An ancient warrior Proper, his arms and thighs vested in mail <strong>of</strong> the last his body habited Gules round the waist a<br />

sword belt Or, across the body from the dexter shoulder a sash Azure, from the middle <strong>of</strong> the thighs to the knees vested Vert, at his side a sword<br />

Proper, hilt and pomel Or, his shoes Argent and his helmet adorned with feathers <strong>of</strong> the last. Sinister: A woman representing Plenty, her underrobe<br />

Argent, her upper-robe flowing Gules in her left hand a cornucopia with fruit Proper.<br />

LUTTRELL [latterly LUTTRELL-OLMIUS] <strong>of</strong> Luttrellstown, Co. Dublin, until 1798, as well as <strong>of</strong> Four Oaks, Warwickshire, Sheepy Hall,<br />

Wiltshire, and Painshill Park in Walton-on-Thames. Baron Irham, 13 Oct 1768, Viscount Carhampton, 9 Jan 1781, Earl <strong>of</strong> Carhampton, 23 Jun<br />

1785. Extinct 1829.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent a fess between three otters passant Sable, in each <strong>of</strong> their months a fish Proper.<br />

Crest: An otter passant sable in his mouth a fish Proper.<br />

As borne by Henry Lawes Luttrell, {1743-1821}, <strong>of</strong> Painshill, 2 nd Earl <strong>of</strong> Carhampton, son <strong>of</strong> Simon Luttrell, (d.1787), <strong>of</strong> Luttrellstown and<br />

Four Oaks, 1 st Earl <strong>of</strong> Carhampton, 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Henry Luttrell, (d.1717), <strong>of</strong> Luttrellstown, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Luttrell <strong>of</strong> Luttrellstown. John Luttrell,<br />

(d.1829), 3 rd Earl, brother and heir <strong>of</strong> the 2 nd Earl, assumed the name and arms <strong>of</strong> Olmius in 1787 on the death <strong>of</strong> Baron Waltham, his 1 st wife's<br />

brother and bore: see under LUTTRELL OLMIUS. Henry Luttrell, (d.1851), wit and society poet, was an illegitimate son <strong>of</strong> the 2 nd Earl.<br />

LUTTRELL William Fownes Luttrell, MA (Oxon), BSc (Econ) (London), <strong>of</strong> 182 Kew Road, Richmond, (b.1908), elder son <strong>of</strong> Major<br />

Hugh Courtenay Fownes Luttrell, DCLI, (1857-1918). •<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Or a bend between six martlets Sable (Luttrell); 2 and 3, Azure in chief two eagles displayed and in base<br />

a mullet Argent (Fownes).<br />
