Archaeology in the University <strong>of</strong> Cambridge, had issue, amongst others, an eldest son Lieutenant-Colonel William Marsden, MA (Cantab), <strong>of</strong><br />

Cedar Court, Farnham and <strong>of</strong> Chelmorton, Derbyshire, (1841-1925), father <strong>of</strong> William John Murray Marsden, OBE, MA (Oxon), <strong>of</strong> 29 Fairway,<br />

Merrow, (1874-1956); and a 2 nd son the Rev. Maurice Howard Marsden, MA (Cantab), (1843-1922), father <strong>of</strong> Major Charles Howard Marsden<br />

OBE, BA (Cantab), The Green Howards, <strong>of</strong> Ingleton, Frensham, Farnham, (1876-1955); and a 3 rd son Reginald Godfrey Marsden, MA (Oxon),<br />

barrister-at-law, (1845-1927), grandfather <strong>of</strong> Hubert Henry Marsden, <strong>of</strong> Bishopsgate Place, Englefield Green, (b.1912).<br />

The family originally bore:<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules on a bend Argent three baldcoots Sable beaked and legged <strong>of</strong> the first in the sinister chief a unicorn's head erased <strong>of</strong><br />

the second.<br />

Crest: A unicorn's head erased Argent gutté-de-sang gorged with a ducal coronet Azure.<br />

Motto: Mars denique victor est.<br />

The family now bears:<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules on a bend between a unicorn's head erased Argent in chief and a key fesswise wards downwards surmounted by a<br />

trefoil slipped palewise in base Or three coots Sable and on a canton Ermine an anchor <strong>of</strong> the fourth.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> an anchor in pale Sable a unicorn's head erased Argent gutté-de-sang ducally gorged Azure in the mouth a trefoil<br />

slipped Vert.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a bend Gules three lozenges <strong>of</strong> the field, in sinister chief a trefoil slipped <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Crest: A greyhound sejant Argent collared Gules ringed Or resting his dexter foot upon a staghead cabossed <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

As granted, Dec 21, 1611, by William Camden, Clarenceux, to John Marshall <strong>of</strong> Southwark, son <strong>of</strong> Richard Marshall, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Marshall<br />

<strong>of</strong> Stamford, Lincolnshire, and as borne (SV1623) by John Marshall and his son John.<br />

MARSHALL Thomas Marshall, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Marshall <strong>of</strong> Eastbourne, Sussex, married, 1743, Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong> William Bryant <strong>of</strong><br />

Haslemere, and was father <strong>of</strong> Robert Bryant Marshall, (b.1744), who inherited considerable property from his uncle, Robert Bryant <strong>of</strong><br />

Haslemere. His son George Marshall, JP, <strong>of</strong> Broadwater, (1796-1852), was father <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-General Frederick Marshall, CMG, JP, <strong>of</strong><br />

Broadwater, (b.1829).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure on a pile between two anchors in base Or an anchor Sable.<br />

Crest: A crested female figure vested Argent the right hand pointing to a rainbow above her head Proper and with the left<br />

supporting an anchor in front Gules.<br />

MARSHALL William Martin Walter Marshall <strong>of</strong> Mariners, Courtlands, Esher, (b.1902), elder son <strong>of</strong> William Hibbert Marshall, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong><br />

Patterdale Hall, Westmorland, (1866-1929); he sold the latter 1937.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Barry <strong>of</strong> six Sable and Argent on a pale Ermine three horseshoes palewise Or.<br />

Crest: A man in armour affronté Proper holding in his dexter hand a javelin supporting with his sinister hand a flagstaff Proper<br />

having a banner Sable charged with two horseshoes Or.<br />

MARSHALL Baron Marshall. Horace Brooks Marshall <strong>of</strong> Brixton, (1829-96), was father <strong>of</strong> Sir Horace Brooks Marshall, PC,<br />

KCVO, MA (TCD), <strong>of</strong> Shabden Park, Chipstead, (1865-1936), Lord Mayor <strong>of</strong> London, 1918, who was created Baron Marshall <strong>of</strong> Chipstead,<br />

1921, but died spms.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Or a pale Vert on a chief flory Gules three antelopes' heads erased <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> a roll <strong>of</strong> paper Proper a stag's head erased Or.<br />

Supporters: Dexter, A dragon Gules; Sinister, an antelope Proper; both collared Or.<br />

Badge: Two violets leaved and slipped Proper enfiled with a Baron's coronet Or.<br />

MARSTON Frederick Milward Marston, <strong>of</strong> 9 Sunnyside, Wimbledon, solicitor, (1875-1949), was son <strong>of</strong> John Marston, JP, <strong>of</strong> The<br />

Gables, Tettenhall, Staffordshire, (1836-1918).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Sable a fess dancetté Ermine between three fleurs-de-lys Argent.<br />

Crest: A demi greyhound Sable collared dancetté Ermine and charged on the shoulder with a plate thereon a mullet Gules.<br />
