SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />
St. JOHN Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon. Rowland Tudor St. John, DLI, <strong>of</strong> 29 Old Deer Park Gardens, Richmond, (1882-1948), was 3 rd<br />
son <strong>of</strong> the 16 th Baron St. John, (1844-1912). Of the same family, Robert St. Andrew St. John, merchant, <strong>of</strong> 2 Windermere Avenue, Merton Park,<br />
later <strong>of</strong> 281 Clapham Road, (b.1887), elder son <strong>of</strong> Robert Newell St. John, (1850-97), and descended from the 10 th Baron St. John, (d.1757); and<br />
Major-General Roger Ellis Tudor St. John, CB, MC, <strong>of</strong> Harelaw, Gorse Hill Road, Virginia Water, (b.1911), elder son <strong>of</strong> Major Beauchamp<br />
Tudor St. John, (1880-1965), and descended from the 14 th Baron St. John, (1811-74).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chief Gules two mullets Or.<br />
Crest: On a mount Vert a falcon rising Or belled <strong>of</strong> the last ducally gorged Gules.<br />

St. JOHN Baron St. John <strong>of</strong> Battersea. Oliver St. John, 1 st Viscount Grandison <strong>of</strong> Limerick, and Baron Tregoze, (dsp 1630),<br />
married Joan, widow <strong>of</strong> Sir William Holcr<strong>of</strong>t, or Rycr<strong>of</strong>t, and daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Henry Roydon, <strong>of</strong> Battersea, qv, with whom he obtained, in<br />
1607, that manor and that <strong>of</strong> Wandsworth. He bequeathed these manors to his nephew Sir John St. John, 1 st Bart., <strong>of</strong> Lydiard Tregoze, (d.1648),<br />
whose grandson Sir Henry St. John, 4 th Bart., <strong>of</strong> Battersea, (1652-1742), was created Baron St. John <strong>of</strong> Battersea, 1716. The present holder <strong>of</strong> the<br />
title is his descendant, the 6 th Viscount Bolingbroke and 7 th Viscount St. John, Captain Stratford Allen Gerald St. John, RN, <strong>of</strong> Thornbury,<br />
Shamley Green, son <strong>of</strong> Vice-Admiral Francis Gerald St. John, CB, MVO, RN, (1869-1947), is descended from Frederick, 3 rd Viscount St. John<br />
and 2 nd Viscount Bolingbroke, (1734-87).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chief Gules two mullets Or.<br />
Crest: A mount Vert thereon a falcon rising Or ducally gorged Gules.<br />

St. JOHN post St. JOHN-MILDMAY Sir Henry Paulet St. John, 2 nd Bart., MA (Oxon), (b.1737), acquired Betchworth Castle and a part <strong>of</strong><br />
Dorking by marriage, 1763, to Dorothy Maria, (d.1768 aged 26), daughter and coheir <strong>of</strong> Abraham Tucker, qv. Their son Sir Henry Paulet St.<br />
John-Mildmay, 3 rd Bart., MA (Cantab), (1764-1808), sold both properties. (VCHS iii 146, 149).<br />

St. LEGER Sir Thomas St. Leger, (executed 1483), was granted the manor <strong>of</strong> Compton Eastbury by Edward IV.<br />

(VCHS iii 172) blazons this as: Argent a cross indented Gules in the dexter quarter a lozenge <strong>of</strong> the last.<br />
St. MARY'S HOSPITAL or PRIORY without Bishopsgate. In 1304-5 Edward I granted property in Shalford and the<br />
advowson to the Hospital or Priory <strong>of</strong> St. Mary without Bishopsgate. The Hospital held the manor <strong>of</strong> Long Ditton from the early 13 th century<br />
until the Dissolution, apparently by grant from William de Mandeville, Earl <strong>of</strong> Essex, (dsp 1227).<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Argent and Sable a cross moline counterchanged in the dexter chief quarter a martlet Gules (or Sable).<br />

St. PAUL'S Dean and Canons <strong>of</strong>. The Manor <strong>of</strong> Barnes was granted to the Dean and Canons <strong>of</strong> St. Paul's before 1086.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale Or and Argent two keys addorsed in bend sinister the bows interlaced in base Gules and Azure within an orle <strong>of</strong> six<br />
sprigs <strong>of</strong> oak fructed Proper on a chief per pale Azure and Gules a lily flower and a chalice Gold with the Host also Argent. Granted 1964.<br />
