PELHAM Earl <strong>of</strong> Chichester. The Rev. Francis Godolphin Pelham, 5 th Earl <strong>of</strong> Chichester, MA (Cantab), (1844-1905), was<br />
Rector <strong>of</strong> Lambeth. His grandson, Anthony George Pelham, MA (Cantab), <strong>of</strong> Buckstepe House, 51 Westleigh Avenue, Putney Hill, (1911-69),<br />
was <strong>of</strong> the Sudan Political Service.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Quarterly, 1 and 4, Azure three pelicans Argent vulning themselves Proper; 2 and 3, Gules two broken belts palewise the<br />
buckles upwards Argent.<br />
Crest: A peacock in pride Argent.<br />
Supporters: Dexter, A horse <strong>of</strong> a mouse colour; Sinister, A bear Proper; each collared with a belt Argent buckle and pendant Or.<br />

PELLEW Viscount Exmouth. Sir Charles Ernest Pellew, 7 th Viscount Exmouth, (1863-1945), was <strong>of</strong> Anthony Place,<br />
Hindhead. Of the same family, Myles Addington Pellew <strong>of</strong> Pinfold, Nursery Road, Walton Heath, Tadworth, (b.1919), 3 rd son <strong>of</strong> Major<br />
Fleetwood Hugo Pellew, West Yorkshire Regiment, (1871-1961), and descended from the 1 st Viscount Exmouth.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules a lion passant guardant and in chief two chaplets <strong>of</strong> laurel Or and (as an honourable augmentation) on a chief wavy<br />
Argent in front <strong>of</strong> a city intended to represent that <strong>of</strong> Algiers, a range <strong>of</strong> batteries flanked on the sinister by a circular fortified castle with triple<br />
battlements Proper thereon two flags displayed the one barry wavy Or and Gules, (indicative <strong>of</strong> the presence <strong>of</strong> the Bey <strong>of</strong> Algiers within the said<br />
castle) and the other <strong>of</strong> the last; on the dexter and abreast <strong>of</strong> the said batteries a ship <strong>of</strong> the line bearing the flag <strong>of</strong> an Admiral <strong>of</strong> the Blue<br />
Squadron moored also Proper.<br />
Crest: The bow <strong>of</strong> a ship with parts <strong>of</strong> the foremast and bowsprit standing and appearing as a wreck on a rock the waves breaking<br />
round her Proper intended to represent the wreck <strong>of</strong> the Dutton, East Indiaman <strong>of</strong>f Plymouth Garrison.<br />

PELLY Sir John Henry Pelly, 1st Bart., <strong>of</strong> Upton, Essex, (1777-1852), had a 4 th son Albert, (1813-94), who was father <strong>of</strong> William<br />
Henry Pelly <strong>of</strong> Colley Bridge, Reigate, (1847-1932). Sir John's 5 th son, Captain Richard Wilson Pelly, DL, RN, (1814-90), had a 4 th son Herbert<br />
Cecil Pelly <strong>of</strong> Venars, Nutfield, (1860-1935), who was father <strong>of</strong> Captain Gilbert Cecil Pelly, RN, <strong>of</strong> Wychwood, South Nutfield, (1892-1961),<br />
and grandfather <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant-Commander David Cecil Pelly, RN, <strong>of</strong> Walden, Marley Common, Haslemere, (b.1922). The above Captain<br />
Richard Wilson Pelly had a 6 th son Admiral Sir Henry Bertram Pelly, KCVO, CB, JP, RN, <strong>of</strong> Broomhouse, West Horsley, (1867-1942), father <strong>of</strong><br />
Commander Douglas Charles Vincent Pelly, RN, <strong>of</strong> Hillrise, Fairmile Avenue, Cobham. Sir John Henry Pelly's 9 th son, Percy Leonard Pelly,<br />
(1826-92), was <strong>of</strong> Oakley, Merstham.<br />
<strong>Arms</strong>: Or on a bend engrailed Azure between two trefoils slipped Vert three martlets Argent.<br />
Crest: Issuant from a crown vallary Or charged on the rim with three hurts an elephant's head Argent.<br />

Crest: A dragon's head Ermine erased Gules ducally gorged Or and transfixed by an arrow fesswise Proper.<br />
