SURREY COATS OF ARMS<br />

RALEGH [RALEIGH] <strong>of</strong> Colyton Raleigh, Devon, then <strong>of</strong> Fardell in Cornwood, Devon, and latterly <strong>of</strong> West Horsley Place. Extinct 1666.<br />

Cadets <strong>of</strong> the Raleghs <strong>of</strong> Nettlecombe Raleigh, Somersetshire. Carew Ralegh, the last male heir, was son <strong>of</strong> the famous Sir Walter Ralegh, the<br />

Elizabethan courtier, seaman and poet, who was born at Hayes Barton in East Budleigh, Devon, which his father had on lease from the Duke<br />

family.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Gules five fusils in bend Argent. (Lysons vi clxix, and bench ends in East Budleigh Church)<br />

Sir Simon de Ralee bore this coat in 1310. (Foster, p.205)<br />

RALLI Stephen John Ralli <strong>of</strong> Chios, (1755-1827), settled in Marseilles after the Massacre <strong>of</strong> Chios, 1822, and had issue, amongst<br />

others, an eldest son John, (1785-1859), who settled in England and founded the house <strong>of</strong> Ralli Bros, with his brother Eustratio, and later<br />

managed the firm's business in Odessa; a 2 nd son, Pandia <strong>of</strong> London, (1793-1865), grandfather <strong>of</strong> Pandia <strong>of</strong> Ashtead Park, (dsp 1924); a 4 th son,<br />

Thomas Stephen, <strong>of</strong> London and Constantinople, (1799-1858), father <strong>of</strong> Pandell, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Cranleigh, (d. unmarried 1928); and a 5 th son,<br />

Eustratio Stephen Ralli <strong>of</strong> Scio House, Putney, (1800-84). The latter, who was responsible with his brother John for establishing the firm <strong>of</strong> Ralli<br />

Bros. in London, was father <strong>of</strong> Sir Lucas Eustratio Ralli, 1 st Bart., <strong>of</strong> Park Street, Westminster, and <strong>of</strong> Scio House, Putney, (1846-1931), who was<br />

created Baronet, 1912. The present holder <strong>of</strong> the title is his grandson Sir Godfrey Victor Ralli, 3 rd Bart., TD, (b.1915).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Azure a lion rampant Argent semé <strong>of</strong> lozenges <strong>of</strong> the first in chief a crescent between two crosses couped <strong>of</strong> the second.<br />

Crest: A lion as in the arms holding between the paws a cross couped Azure.<br />

RAM Abel Ram <strong>of</strong> Ramsfort, Co. Wexford, (d.1832), acquired the manor <strong>of</strong> Bermondsey by marriage, 1818, to Eleanor Sarah,<br />

daughter and heir <strong>of</strong> Jerome Knapp <strong>of</strong> Charlton House, Berkshire, and was succeeded by his son Stephen Ram, DL, <strong>of</strong> Ramsfort, (1819-99), and<br />

grandson Arthur Archibald Ram <strong>of</strong> Ramsford, (1852-1905). They were descended from the Rt. Rev. Thomas Ram, MA, DD (Cantab), Bishop <strong>of</strong><br />

Ferns and Leighin, (d.1634), who was ancestor also <strong>of</strong> Abel John Ram <strong>of</strong> Hollybank, Underhill Lane, Lower Bourne, Farnham, (b.1927), eldest<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Sir Lucius Abel John Granville Ram, KCB, KC, JP, (1885-1952); the Rev. Stopford James Ram, Vicar <strong>of</strong> Christ Church, Battersea,<br />

(1826-81); the Rev. Edward Digby Stopford Ram, MA (Oxon), (1868-1917), <strong>of</strong> Clonattin, Co. Wexford, (which he sold 1916), Rector <strong>of</strong> Oxted,<br />

1902-17; his brother George Montagu Ram <strong>of</strong> Landitty, Dover House Road, Roehampton, (1881-1948); and Edward George Ram <strong>of</strong> Jacobs<br />

Well, Guildford, (b.1948).<br />

RAMSAY Baron <strong>of</strong> Kingston-upon-Thames. John Ramsay, Viscount <strong>of</strong> Haddington, Lord Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Barns, and Lord Ramsay <strong>of</strong><br />

Melrose, (c.1580-1626), 2 nd son <strong>of</strong> Robert Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Wylieclough, was created Baron <strong>of</strong> Kingston-upon-Thames and Earl <strong>of</strong> Holdernesse, 1621,<br />

but died sps.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Per pale, Dexter ….. an arm issuing out <strong>of</strong> the shield holding a sword paleways piercing a heart and supporting an imperial<br />

crown Proper; Sinister, Argent a double eagle displayed Sable a crescent on its breast. (GEC)<br />

Burke gives; Per pale, 1, Argent an eagle displayed Sable beaked and membered Gules charged on the breast with a crescent <strong>of</strong> the field;<br />

2, (<strong>of</strong> augmentation, granted in honour <strong>of</strong> his services to James VI in the Earl <strong>of</strong> Gowrie's conspiracy), Azure issuing out <strong>of</strong> the sinister part <strong>of</strong><br />

the shield a dexter arm Or holding a sword erect Argent pommel and hilt Gold piercing a human heart Gules the point supporting an imperial<br />

Bishop's Cottage, Crowborough, Sussex, barrister-at-law, (b.1872), younger son <strong>of</strong> John Ramsbotham, JP, <strong>of</strong> Stony Royd, Ilkley, Yorkshire, and<br />

<strong>of</strong> Crowborough Warren, Sussex, (1839-1905).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a fess Gules between ten pellets three fleurs-de-lys Or.<br />

RAMSDEN Richard Ramsden <strong>of</strong> Islington, (dvp 1843), was father <strong>of</strong> Richard Ramsden, JP, MA (Cantab), <strong>of</strong> Siddinghurst, barrister-atlaw,<br />

(1841-1921), whose eldest son Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Elmslie Ramsden, DSO, RFA, <strong>of</strong> The Beeches, Bagshot, (b.1875), sold<br />

Siddinghurst, 1929.<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chevron invected between two rams' heads erased in chief and a fleur-de-lys in base all Sable a ram's head erased<br />

between two fleurs-de-lys <strong>of</strong> the field.<br />

Crest: In front <strong>of</strong> an arm in armour embowed the hand in a gauntlet Proper grasping a ram's head in bend sinister three fleurs-de-lys<br />

Sable.<br />

RAMSDEN Ge<strong>of</strong>frey Anthony Frecheville Ramsden, LDS, <strong>of</strong> 202a West Hill, Putney, (b.1919), eldest son <strong>of</strong> Major Arthur Ge<strong>of</strong>frey<br />

Francis Ramsden, DSO, RA, (1887-1945), and was descended from Sir William Ramsden, 2 nd Bart., (1672-1736), as was Edward Feilden<br />

Ramsden <strong>of</strong> Glengarry, Salisbury Avenue, Cheam, (b.1893), son <strong>of</strong> Algernon Feilden Ramsden, (1850-1922). Of the same family John Charles<br />

Francis Ramsden, DL, JP, <strong>of</strong> Willinghurst, {Shamley Green}, (1835-1910), was grandson <strong>of</strong> Sir John Ramsden, 4 th Bart., (1755-1839), and was<br />

father <strong>of</strong> Captain Frederick William Ramsden, Coldstream Guards, <strong>of</strong> Willinghurst, (1864-1928).<br />

<strong>Arms</strong>: Argent on a chevron between three fleurs-de-lys Sable as many rams' heads couped at the neck <strong>of</strong> the first. *<br />
