homes, card-playing, and so on. Only two short chapters deal
with sex. He warns old men 1) not to confuse boners caused
by an enlarged prostate with a return of sexual vigor and 2)
to keep their mitts off little girls. Geezers should just smoke
cigars and read.
Sex and Society is the final volume in this sad decalogy. Keller
realizes that it’s his last chance to make points about sex,
and the man goes bonkers. This is by far the most outlandish
and weirdly entertaining book in the batch. He covers a lot
of the same ground as the previous nine books—rephrasing
it in the strongest possible terms, sometimes contradicting
himself—and makes a few new points. Among the choice
passages:
If we can imagine a womanless world, where
would be the incentive for doing ninety-nine of the
hundred tasks of life?

He may be taught masturbation at this time of
his life [age six to adolescence], but if he is well
trained and educated in time, he will be able to
avoid this unpleasant part of life.

Finally, these children grow up and there is a
sexual relation between parents and child. This,
if it is kept with normal bounds, is in every way
a healthy thing, but if it sweeps past the bounds
of normality, it becomes a threatening disease
and vice. [Keller doesn’t elaborate on this freaky
declaration.]

So, the only sexual intercourse that is legal is
that between husband and wife. This is such an
important truth that it must be repeated. Its
purpose is to establish the permanency of the
home, give the children a respectable and legal
paternity and fill the state with a multitude of
moral families.

When a woman has been married five times and
divorced four times and has never been pregnant
by any of her husbands and is not yet thirty years
of age, we can well ask ourselves if this is not a
form of legalized prostitution rather than marriage
in the true sense.

Consider the fact that some specialists in sexual
diseases estimate that as high as seventy or eighty
per cent of all males are infected with gonorrhoea
before the age of twenty-one!

If three generations of boys can be properly
educated and guarded till they marry, then in that
length of time the entire evil [i.e., prostitution] can
be wiped out.

It is well known that the colored race is unmoral
rather than immoral and that sexual promiscuity
is the rule and morality the exception.

forms of caressing, known under the collective
term of petting.

The past history of all races has shown that the
amount of clothing worn by the women, the degree
of eroticism developed by contact, especially in
dancing, and the two, combined with alcohol,
are all powerful excitants of eroticism. In past
ages these factors were always the prelude to the
destruction of the nation.

The recent flood of pornographic literature, posing
under the name of art, has even a more powerful
force for the promotion of erotic in life.

Lacking the courage of normal men, they take
their dope before killing, in order to stimulate their
flagging lust for blood. Especially among the negro
race is cocaine a precursor to crime. The negro will
take a few sniffs of “snow”, and at once he is a
