Admittedly, the world of English-language erotica didn’t lose
much by having this scene completely bowdlerized in the
translation, but at least we now know what we weren’t supposed
to see.
The Sex Fantasies Missing From
Our Bodies, Ourselves
Our Bodies, Ourselves is an undisputed feminist classic and
perhaps the most important women’s health book ever published.
It’s gone through numerous incarnations: published as
Women and Their Bodies by the New England Free Press in
1970; reissued the next year with its current title; picked up
by Simon & Schuster in 1973; published in its eighth edition
in early 2005.
The Boston Women’s Health Book Collective has made a lot
of changes to the Simon & Schuster editions of their book
over three decades. Obviously, the photos of 1970s women—with
their perfectly straight hair, big glasses, and bellbottom
jeans—were jettisoned, as was the photograph of a
hairy vagina in a mirror. There’s no trace of the chapter “In
Amerika They Call Us Dykes.”
And something else is missing. In the section on women’s
sexual fantasies, only two of the original fantasies remain.
The other ten have disappeared or have been replaced. Not
surprisingly, half of the missing dealt with highly forbidden
sex acts. Though the newest edition mentions that it’s okay
to have taboo fantasies, it can no longer work up the nerve
to actually present them. 11 Here are some of the deleted fantasies
from the 1973 edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves, presented
in the women’s own words:
I’ve had fantasies of having to drink urine from a
man’s penis while he was peeing.

When I was a kid, every time I masturbated I
imagined my parents spanking me as I climaxed.
When I got older it changed to my parents making
love, then to my being kissed by someone, then to
my making love.

they are very sensuous animals, more so than
cows or pigs. They are also very male animals--
horse society is very chauvinist.

does contain a single semi-taboo fantasy, which isn’t in the first edition.
After the text mentions rape fantasies, it presents a woman’s verbatim
fantasy, leading us to expect a rape scenario. Instead, the willing woman
is tied up while a man and woman “make love” to her. This, plus her
subsequent explanation, makes it clear that she’s having a bondagethreesome
fantasy, not a rape fantasy.
