While some primates may be prelates, not all primates are
people. Of those primates who are people, many human females
have problems reaching orgasm during intercourse. Dr.
Dolores Elaine Keller, a biologist and full professor at Pace
University in New York City, is also a psychologist and psychotherapist.
Dr. Keller, who specializes in sexual disor ders
and marital therapy, wondered whether orgasmic difficulty
was a generalized female primate condition.
She reasoned that if human females had less difficulty in
reaching orgasm with clitoral stimulation, nonhuman primates
should be tested to see if this is also true for them. Watching

primates mate led her to conclude that intravaginal thrusting
time is brief. This suggested why orgasm during intercourse
might be difficult to attain for the female primate.
From prelates on down into the evolutionary past, predating
humans, apparently male primates insert penis, thrust, then
ejaculate within ten seconds. Certainly by today’s standards
of proper primate sexual performance, premature ejaculation
is a rampant primate problem. Most female partners of such
primates have trouble having orgasms during intercourse—
even though the potential is there.
Keller investigated noncoital orgasm in Pan troglodytes chimpanzees
at the Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and
Surgery in Primates, a division of New York University’s Medical
Center.
Sure enough, two chimpanzees did experience orgasm with
digital clitoral stimulation, and one, Nanette, also climaxed
with the use of an electric vibrator on her clitoris, a sexual
first for Pans and for Nanette.
Shu Shu was afraid of the vibrator (a modified Prelude 2 frequently
used in sexual therapy for nonorgasmic human females),
but did evidence thrusting pelvic contractions as well
