cuts to the heart of what’s happening in the queer community
right now. Things have gone so far beyond the 1970s
post-Stonewall days that it’s high time we acknowledge it.
Queen notes that sometimes queers are far more sexually
conservative than most people assume they are. “There is
still a fair amount of controversy about sexuality
which isn’t specifically genitally focused,”
she says. She’s referring not just to bisexuality,
an orientation that is less about a specific type
of genitals than about a specific sort of person,
but also to kinky sex, which might be focused on leather, latex,
feet, piss, bondage, or any number of other things that
have nothing to do with the genitals of your object of desire.
For homosexuals, whose sexuality is genitally focused (they
want partners with only one sort of genitalia), queer sexuality
that goes beyond genital preference can be upsetting and
challenging.
But, as Queen points out, “If being radical outsiders is part of
our queer history, then other radical outsiders who challenge
the same things we challenge must be in the club part of the
time.”
The queer community needs to continue the social critique
that got started several decades ago in a small New York gay
bar that was busted by the cops. While some queers are happy
to settle into marriage and family life, many of us can never
do that. We cannot assimilate. And when homosexuals react
in horror to bisexual kisses and kinky, nonmonogamous sex
and transgendered bodies, it’s as if we’ve come in to pervert
