will cease to be necessary before the state withers away” 1and that after the end of the dictatorship of the proletariat, there is yet another stage, the “state of the whole people”.These are out-and-out sophistries. In his “Critique of the Gotha Programme”, Marx advancedthe well-known axiom that the dictatorship of the proletariatis the state of the period of transition from capitalism to communism.Lenin gave a clear explanation of this Marxistaxiom. He said:In his “Critique of the Gotha Programme” Marx wrote:“Between capitalist and communist society lies the periodof the revolutionary transformation of the one into theother. There corresponds to this also a political transitionperiod in which the state can be nothing but the revolutionarydictatorship of the proletariat.”Up to now this axiom has never been disputed by Socialists, and yet it implies the recognition of the existence ofthe state right up to the time when victorious socialismhas grown into complete communism. 2Lenin further said:The essence of Marx’s teaching on the state has beenmastered only by those who understand that the dictatorshipof a single class is necessary not only for every classsociety in general, not only for the proletariat which hasoverthrown the bourgeoisie, but also for the entire historicalperiod which separates capitalism from “classless society”,from Communism. 31“Programme for the Building of Communism”, editorial boardarticle in Pravda, August 18, 1961.2V.
