A precise analysis of changes in the world situation enabledthe fraternal parties of the whole world to work out a Marxist-Leninist definition of our era: “Our time, whose main contentis the transition from capitalism to socialism, initiated by theGreat October Socialist Revolution, is a time of struggle betweenthe two opposing social systems, a time of socialistrevolutions and national-liberation revolutions, a time of thebreakdown of imperialism, of the abolition of the colonialsystem, a time of transition of more peoples to the socialistpath, of the triumph of socialism and communism on a worldwidescale.”This definition of our era was the basis for a correct approachin working out the strategy and tactics of the worldcommunist movement.The Marxist-Leninist parties have defined their generalline, the basic propositions of which are as follows:— the nature and content of the world revolutionary processin our time are determined by the merger into a singlestream of the struggle against imperialism waged by the peoplesbuilding socialism and communism, the revolutionaryworking-class movement in capitalist countries, the nationalliberationmovement of oppressed peoples, and general democraticmovements; the decisive role in the alliance of antiimperialistrevolutionary forces belongs to the internationalworking class and its chief creation — the socialist worldsystem, which exerts its main influence on the developmentof the world socialist revolution by the power of its example,by its economic progress;— due to the prevailing objective conditions of history(extreme sharpening of imperialist aggressiveness, emergenceof weapons of vast destructive power, etc.) central among allthe tasks confronting the anti-imperialist forces in the presentera is the struggle to prevent thermonuclear war. Unitingall the peace forces to defend peace and save mankind fromnuclear disaster is the primary task of the Communist parties;574
— the socialist revolution is performed as a result of theinternal development of the class struggle in each country,its forms and paths are determined by the concrete conditionsof each country. A law common to all countries is the revolutionaryoverthrow of capitalist power and establishment, inone or another form, of proletarian dictatorship. The task ofthe working class and the Communist parties is to make maximumuse of possibilities now available for a peaceful path ofsocialist revolution, one not connected with civil war, and, atthe same time, be prepared for a non-peaceful path, for armedsuppression of the resistance of the bourgeoisie; the generaldemocratic struggle is a necessary component of the strugglefor socialism;— the aim of the working class and the Communist partiesin the national-liberation movement is to carry to completionthe tasks of the anti-imperialist democratic revolution, developand consolidate the national front based on alliance with thepeasantry and the patriotically-minded national bourgeoisie;prepare the conditions for forming national-democratic statesand for transition to the non-capitalist path of development;— relations of co-operation and mutual assistance betweensocialist countries, solidarity and unity of the internationalcommunist and labour movement, faithful observance of jointlyworked out positions and appraisals, fidelity to the Leninistprinciples of party life and relations between parties — theseare necessary requisites for the successful solution of the historictasks confronting the Communists.Such, in the present era, are the basic development pathsof the world revolutionary process; such are the basic propositionsof the general line of the international communistmovement in the present stage. The battle for peace, democracy,national independence and socialism — that, briefly, isthe substance of this general line.
