El sueño americano: Una ilusión inalcanzable para la mujer judía americana
'Oi weh! Yetta! I can´t stand it!' The cry broke from me. 'I didn´t come to
America to turn into a machine. I came to America to make myself for a
person. Does America want only my hands - only the strength of my body
- not my heart - not my feelings - my thoughts?'
Our heads ain´t smart enough' said Yetta, practically. 'We ain´t been to
school like the American born'.
'What for did I come to America but to go to school - to learn - to think -
to make something beautiful from my life.' 37
Yezierska muestra que el trabajo mecánico, junto a la pobreza, ejercen un
efecto pernicioso sobre los trabajadores al convertirlos en unos salvajes. Esto
conduce a la deshumanización del sujeto, tal y como expone la narradora:
I saw for the first time how mean, how vile, were the creatures with whom
I had to work. How the fear for bread had dehumanized their last shred of
humanity! I felt I had not been working among human beings, but in a
jungle of savages who had to eat one another alive in order to survive. 38
No todos los escritores judíos de la época describían la vida de los judíos
inmigrantes pobres. Así por ejemplo, Cahan, alejado de la realidad cotidiana de los
habitantes del gueto, pone en boca de su personaje las siguientes palabras:
The United States lured me not merely as a land of milk and honey, but
also, and perhaps chiefly, as one of mystery, of fantastic experiences, of
marvelous transformations. To leave my native place and to seek my
fortune in that distant, weird world seemed to be just the kind of
sensational adventure my heart was hankering for. 39
Si bien Yezierska plasma en su galería de personajes una tipología del sueño
americano bastante acertada, su magistralidad reside en la descripción psicológica
del coste que tal sueño tenía sobre sus jóvenes heroínas. En Bread Givers, Sarah
ha de procurar desprenderse de su tradición para integrarse en el mundo
americano, abandonando su comunidad y relaciones con los hombres de su
