Capítulo VII LA EDUCACION COMO MEDIO DE ACCEDER AL SUEÑO AMERICANO Anzia Yezierska y su familia eran conscientes de que la escuela constituía la única puerta de acceso al éxito en América. Esto se refleja en el hecho de que, efectivamente, sus hermanos estudiaron en las escuelas nocturnas para inmigrantes y llegaron a ser, uno, farmacéutico, otro, profesor de matemáticas y, el último, militar profesional. Por el contrario, las hermanas de Yezierska siguieron caminos bien distintos al renunciar a la escuela y obedecer a su padre, convirtiéndose en jóvenes esposas y madres. 1 Influida por la ideología progresista de John Dewey, Yezierska cuestiona el sistema educativo norteamericano proponiendo un estilo de enseñanza más personalizado, dirigido a cubrir las necesidades específicas de los estudiantes. Sólo este tipo de educación podía conducir a las jóvenes heroínas inmigrantes a la consecución del sueño americano. Pero el precio que las heroínas han de pagar por su educación en las instituciones norteamericanas es el desarraigo. Ahora bien, Yezierska duda que las mujeres inmigrantes pudieran lograr sus objetivos de esta manera. En este capítulo me propongo debatir la importancia de la práctica educativa como elemento posibilitador de las metas y objetivos de los personajes femeninos de Yezierska. Comenzaré con una contextualización apropiada del tema, para lo que ofreceremos algunos datos biográficos sobre nuestra escritora; continuaré con un recorrido por las diversas ideas que otros escritores, como Tillie Olsen y Abraham Cahan, tenían sobre la educación de la mujer. Trataré las implicaciones que el sueño americano, entendido como conocimiento, tiene en el planteamiento de nuestra escritora, la preocupación de las activistas por la incultura femenina, la consolidación de las escuelas públicas en la urbe neoyorquina y terminaré prestando atención a la crítica que hace Yezierska del sistema educativo. Y es que a pesar de que la enseñanza en Norteamérica facilitó de manera importante la incorporación de la mujer inmigrante a algunas profesiones liberales, especialmente la de maestra de escuela, en realidad, no podían aspirar a mucho más. De aquí que Yezierska guarde en Bread Givers, escrita en 1925, cierto distanciamiento del 227
