The kitchen walls melted away to the far off times in Russia, as Mother
went on and on with her fairy tales till late hours of the night. Once Mother
got started she couldn´t stop herself, telling more and more. She was like
drunk with the memories of old times. 83
En otro momento de la novela, al explicar cómo fue su ceremonia nupcial, la
madre está transmitiendo a las hijas los usos y costumbres de su tierra; usos, por
otro lado, de carácter positivo, que contribuían a la reconstrucción de una herencia
cultural judía. La madre explica aquí la pedida de la novia:
In the morning father sent messengers to all the neighbours to come and
eat with him cake and wine for his daughter´s wedding that was to be the
next day of the engagement, and then I was too bashful to really look on
him. I only stole a glance now and then, but I could see how it shined from
his face the high learning, like from an inside sun. Nobody in the villages
around had a dowry like mine. 84
Continuando con la transmisión de las tradiciones nupciales vemos que en el
período del cortejo entre los novios, el casamentero desarrollaba un papel
importante como nexo en el caso de que las familias de ambos no hubieran tenido
oportunidad de conocerse. El siguiente párrafo, perteneciente a Yentl, de Isaac
Bashevis Singer, describe con detalle la celebración nupcial y los pasos a seguir por
los novios hasta el día de la boda, sólo que, en este caso, Peshe, la novia, es una
viuda y el procedimiento, aunque diferente, no deja de ser curioso:
He became engaged to Peshe, and brought honey cake and brandy to the
yeshiva. An early wedding date was set. When the bride-to-be is a widow,
there´s no need to wait for trousseau. Everything is ready. The groom,
moreover, was an orphan and no one´s advice had to be asked. The
yeshiva students drank the brandy and offered their congratulations.
Anshel also took a sip, but promptly choked on it. 85
No es extraño que la boda tuviera tanto valor social, ya que la tradición judía
contemplaba el matrimonio como la única unión posible desde el punto de vista legal
y religioso, entre seres de sexos distintos. Esto se refleja incluso en la lengua
