Yezierska representa desde el punto de vista de una mujer judía inmigrante el
concepto de la "doble conciencia" de W.E.B. DuBois, según el cual "two souls, two
thoughts, two unreconciled strivings, two warring ideals" luchan en la mente del
escritor negro. 19 Esta contienda psíquica hace que que la pertenencia a la sociedad
norteamericana de las heroínas de Yezierska no sea más que "an empty illusion." 20
Todo esto se refleja, como apuntaba más arriba, en el uso consciente de la lengua
inglesa y el yiddish en las historias cortas de Yezierska. 21
En "The Free Vacation House" Yezierska critica la superioridad cultural
angloamericana que, en una joven madre inmigrante, produce un sentimiento de
inferioridad y de humillación. El relato, en primera persona, comienza de la siguiente
manera: "How came it that I went to the free vacation house was like this..." 22 La
crítica de la narradora hacia la hipocresía de la institución filantrópica que le ofrece
unas vacaciones gratis en compañía de sus hijos no es directa, sino que se
encuentra implícita en la inversión del inglés correcto de la maestra. El siguiente
extracto en el que la maestra aconseja a la joven madre tomarse unas vacaciones
es una buena muestra de lo que acabo de decir: " 'My dear woman', she says, 'you
are about to have a nervous breakdown. You need to get away to the country for a
rest and vacation.' " 23 En contraste con las líneas anteriores véase la simplicidad y la
repetición de la construcción sintáctica "For Why?" (traducción literal del yiddish
farvos), que, a juicio de Konzett, no añaden significado alguno, pero contribuyen a
caracterizar el habla de los judíos inmigrantes que Yezierska autoriza en el texto:
On the way riding back, I kept thinking to myself: "This is such a beautiful
vacation house. For why do they make it so hard for us? When a mother
needs a vacation, why must they tear the insides out from her first by
making her come down to the charity office? Why drag us from the charity
office through the streets? And when we live through the shame of the
charities and when we come already to the vacation house, for why do
they boss the life out of us with so many rules and bells? For why don´t
they let us lay down our heads on the bed when we are tired? For why
must we always stick in the back, like dogs what have got to be chained in
one spot? 24
