Aún más interesante es el reconocimiento del derecho de la mujer a sentir
placer sexual, como explica Aunt Minnie al final de la historia cuando retoma el
episodio con su primo Malcolm, de oficio predicador, para explicar que lo abrazó
voluntariamente guiada por el deseo:
T'would do girls good to know that they are just like everybody else -
human nature and sex, all mixed up together. I didn´t have to hug him, I
wouldn´t have, if he´d been dirty or fat and old, or chewed tobacco. 112
La obra de Fisher se enmarca en la preocupación social por la libertad sexual y
muy especialmente, por el comercio sexual, problema que afectaba de manera
directa a las mujeres pobres. La inmigrante Emma Goldman reflexionaba sobre el
lenocinio, criticándolo como "the white slave traffic" y argumentando que estaba
causado fundamentalmente por la doble moral social. Lo mismo que Fisher,
Goldman denuncia en este párrafo la falta de educación sexual entre los jóvenes:
Society considers the sex experiences of a man as atributes of his
general development, while similar experiences in the life of a woman are
looked upon as a terrible calamity, a loss of honor and of all that is good
and noble in a human being. This double standard of morality has played
no little part in the creation and perpetuation of prostitution. It involves the
keeping of the young in absolute ignorance on sex matters, which alleged
"innocence", together with an overwrought and stifled sex nature, helps to
bring about a state of affairs that our Puritans are so anxious to avoid or
prevent. 113
Por su parte, Margaret Sanger (1883-1966) lanzaría una campaña destinada a
derribar las barreras legales que impedían la información ciudadana sobre los
medios anticonceptivos. Y es que, Sanger acertadamente intuía que una de las
claves en la lucha por la liberación de la mujer residía en el control de la natalidad:
