ABSTRACT
This thesis entitled "AM maroon, GOOD STUDENT AND GOOD BALL" The
constitution of identity in high school students: a historical anthropological study with
young residents of a community reminiscent of the interior quilombo miner. New Minas,
Minas Gerais, the result of research conducted at the Graduate Program in Education at the
Catholic University of Minas Gerais. It was a historical anthropological study of a qualitative
nature which was aimed at understanding how identities are constituted of young high school
students, residents of a remnant of Quilombo communities and studying in a school located
outside the community where they live. The State School of Ribeirão Leaf is located in the
district of Ribeirão da Folha and the community they live in the subjects of this research is the
Quilombo. Both the District of Ribeirão da Folha, the Quilombo of the community are located
in rural areas in the interior of the city of New Minas, Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais -
Brazil. In these times and spaces tried to understand how they are formed, shaped or denied
the identities of the subjects having as main categories: culture, identity, ethno-racial
community inhabitant, rural education, among others. The methodology used was participant
observation, in which the field work, between the first and last visit lasted for about 17
months, from July 2010 to December 2011. During the months from January to May 2011,
she lived in the search field. For the development of participant observation techniques were
employed as the systematic and unsystematic observations, informal conversations,
memorials made by the subjects, open interviews and dialogues, and analysis of official
documents of the school. The results showed that the school does not value the cultures of the
surrounding communities, as well as the cultures of the region remnants of Quilombo,
because in none of the analyzed documents could be found clues that tell of the cultures of
individuals and communities. In contrast to this distance from the school of reality where it
belongs, the students heard in this study value the school and education as a necessary means
to achieve economic rise and somehow contribute to the progress of the community where
they live. And finally, the research shows that for young students, being a person is maroon,
first of all, take their participation within the community, is to recognize their offspring and
their culture as different from the culture of the "other" is to be different as a principle of
otherness, and in recognition of otherness, realize that skin color is not the main element of
differentiation, since the community has people with different phenotypic characteristics,
ranging from white, to those that carry traits indigenous and black.
