is seen as a reflecting and experiencing human being, who makes his/her own decisions
concerning uniqueness and holiness. This, as proposed here, includes the spatial way of being in
existence.
Nevertheless, a human being is viewed as a person who is endlessly interconnected
with the space in the mode of interpreting impressions, and ascribing his or her meaning to one’s
personal experiences. For this reason, the entity of body, soul and spirit is seen as constantly
involved by space in the movement of mental/spiritual health and suffering. Along with this, the
author's belief has been that the mentally/spiritually suffering perceptions of care depend on the
unique process which is present in every culture and which influences people in each and every
aspect of individual life. According to Eriksson (1993, 1994) there is a dialectic relation between
health and suffering. Furthermore, it is ontologically health for a human being to find a
meaningful balance between living in solitary and communion. A human being needs, besides
time, a space to suffer. Health then is multidimensional as doing, being and becoming health.
This indicates that
it is constantly moving toward a unity and holiness, which is seen as
consistent with endurable suffering. Guided by this horizon a three-stage analysis and
interpretation was then conducted.
Methodology and methods
This study is made in the context of basic research, which means here that the focus of research
is prim arily based on the question of what, not on how. Hence one generally meets some
fundamental difficulties in trying
to impart an interpretative understanding about a certain
phenomenon.
One of the most immediate ones is language itself. To no inconsiderable extent all
research in fact is a linguistic praxis. Hence, when searching
for the very meaning of space it was
necessary
to carefully think over the ontological and epistemological concerns before choosing a
certain methodological course and action. Every discipline has some theory about how actual
reality is regarded. This horizon of interpretation gives a certain direction for a study. It means
that the theoretical perspective is like a mirror reflecting the reality and the object of interest, not
in a general, but in a particular way.
