feature. The results are summarized in a theoretical model comprising different levels and
dimensions of how, i.e. as what the space is shaped in the world of caring.
Results
The results of the concept analysis gave a tentative idea about the semantic scope of the space.
According to this, divergent extents of the space were pointed out: the vertical and the horizontal.
From
these emerged subsequently six metaphorically summarized entities of meaning on an
existential level. Then, in the next stage, through a gradually deepening dialogue with literary
texts, six metaphorically summarized entities of meaning emerged. The comprehensive form of
space was firstly pointed out as the metaphor of the Mobile-Immobile Room for the movement of
health and suffering. Furthermore, as the Standby it highlights a kind of a temporary hideaway to
get rest, and a time-out from a burden, when it has turned out to be unbearable. The space comes
into view as a transit place in a person’s being in the world so to speak on his/her own account
when a person is more severely afflicted with suffering. In addition, the Asylum signifies a kind
of more long-standing hideaway or retreat. It is formed as a shelter in order to face one’s
suffering, or on the contrary to keep it away, if it turns out to be (more) reminiscent. The Wall is
formed as an advanced stage of constant feeling of suffering. Thus, the Wall is a kind of a
containing space for unbearable or meaningless suffering. The Place finally is a vague sentiment
of authentic “at-homeness” as well as an experience of rootedness for the human being existing
in the world.
In the further dialogue with the texts, the understandings of these entities of content of meaning
has deepened in an ontological direction. Three entities of ontological meaning have
metaphorically emerged: the Common Land, the Ice World and the Spiritual Home. In order to
understand the meaning of how the human being’s space is shaped in the light of his or her
suffering in the movement of mental health, the interpretation and synthesizing process has
culminated by relating these to Eriksson’s ontological health model.
emerges as the ideal concept of mutual creation in the freedom of doing, being and becoming
health as a human being. The Ice World is understood very much but not entirely as the opposite
