5 Other materials and structures 5.1 Ivory, ivory-like teeth, bone and antler Ivory, bone, antler and related materials have been used in furniture in a variety of ways, as structural elements comprising the bulk of the object, as decorative elements such as knobs and inlays, and as veneers. Ivory veneers for furniture were generally sawn longitudinally, but documentary sources indicate that some veneers were continuously cut from the circumference of a prepared ivory cylinder much as modern plywood veneers are cut from a log. The Parisian piano-maker Papé Figure 5.1 Chair made from unworked antler 194 had a method patented early in the nineteenth century to produce ivory veneer by a spiral paring of the tooth that was capable of producing leaves up to 43 cm by 95 cm in size (Holzapffel and Holzapffel, 1843). Pieces of furniture made entirely of elephant ivory have been occasionally produced throughout history. Furniture made from assemblages of unworked antlers were popular in European and American hunting lodges and Scottish country houses (Figure 5.1). An excellent introduction to the structure and properties of these materials is provided by Starling and Watkinson (1987). Ivory Strictly speaking, true ivory is material from the tusks (incisor teeth) of elephants and mammoths of the Proboscidean order. Walruses, hippopotamuses, various pig species and narwhals (rare arctic whales) also produce tusks large enough to have been exploited economically and have been used as sources for ivory in furniture (Figure 5.2). The large teeth of sperm whales (Physter catodon) and killer whales (Orcinus orca) have been carved and decorated in their original form as teeth but are not used as a source for ivory and are unlikely to be found in furniture. Elephant ivory has always been the most sought after and commonly used of these materials in artefacts and furniture but walrus and mammoth ivory have also been historically important. Mammoth and elephant tusks are much larger than those from other sources and are relatively soft and even in coloration and texture, with an attractive ‘figure’ or grain.
