Principles of conserving and repairing wooden furniture 447
Figure 10.6 Clamping/cramping set-ups
(a) Eighteenth century mahogany spiral fluted urn, attributed to John Cobb, catalogued in Gilbert (1978: 347). A
tourniquet was used to apply pressure around the circumference of the urn. G-cramps (with softening blocks) were
used to prevent the tourniquet slipping. (b) The flutes in the lid were aligned with the flutes on the urn. Thin
plastic film protected vulnerable surfaces and allowed the use of adhesive tape to apply cramping pressure. (c) A
damaged papier mâché globe. (d) Pressure applied evenly around the globe by tying together two pieces of rubber
sheeting. (e) Jig to allow the application of cramping pressure to the curved stock of a gun
