602 Conservation of Furniture
oughly after every use and oiled periodically.
The spray pattern of an airbrush should be circular
and symmetrical. Different needles and
heads may be used to adjust the shape and size
of the spray. As with spray guns, the needle is
adjusted within the cone to reduce or increase
the flow of varnish. Although most problems are
caused by the operator, either by faulty technique
or poor maintenance of equipment, faults
in spray pattern will occur when the washer in
the head wears out or if the needle is bent or
damaged. As with spray guns, a black tile may
be used as a test surface for transparent coatings
to assess whether the correct adjustments have
been made, that spray technique is correct and
that the level of gloss is satisfactory.
Williams (1983) gave clear and detailed
instructions on how airbrushes work, preparation
and assembly, problems that are commonly
encountered, cleaning and application
techniques. Textbooks on air brushing are regularly
produced for the graphic arts market
(e.g. Owen and Sutcliffe, 1988).
Spray equipment used with compressed air
should have three additional devices – a dehumidifier,
a pressure regulator and a pressure
gauge. The dehumidifier removes droplets of
water formed by condensation when the air is
compressed. A pressure regulator will maintain
pressure from day to day and is used to change
the air pressure depending on the equipment
that is being used. Many compressors have a
built-in pressure gauge for checking the air
pressure.
