Plate 8 Lacquer sections viewed in
cross-section
(a) Photomicrograph of a crosssection
of a Japanese export
lacquer surface (c.1600) viewed
under visible light. Two ground
layers are apparent, the first (1)
characterized by the use of coarse
unevenly sized particles, the second
(2) by fine evenly sized particles.
The lacquer layers (3) above the
ground appear black. Layer (4) is
dark brown and has a translucent
appearance, whilst layer (5) is grey
(b) Cross-section from an early
eighteenth century Coromandel
screen viewed under near UV. An
example of the orange autofluorescence
that can be seen in
some black lacquers
(c) Photomicrograph of (a) viewed
under UV. Layer (3) comprises nonfluorescent
lacquer layers. Layer (4)
can be seen auto-fluorescing bright
white, indicating that it is a natural
resin varnish
