On 25 October 2004, Mondal’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law killed Mondal by forcing her to
ingest poison. Mondal was pregnant when she was killed. After her death, her husband’s family
ran away from their home.
On 25 October 2004, Mondal’s father lodged a FIR with the Canning PS regarding Mondal’s
death, and on 27 October 2004, he lodged an additional FIR with Canning PS that included the
fact that Mondal was pregnant when she was killed. After repeated requests from Mondal’s
family, some police officers went to Mondal’s husband’s home, but he was not there. An
eyewitness servant explained to the police that Mondal’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law had
killed Mondal.
No arrests have been by the Canning PS despite repeated urging from Mondal’s father. Further,
Mondal’s father receives threats that he must withdraw the complaints or he will suffer
consequences.
