Case Details:
On 17August 2006, more than one individual participated in the killing of victim Saokat Ali
Biswas. Biswas was a bodyguard. His body was found bound with rope and buried in the bank
of the Bidyadhari River. A spade was found near the body. However, the police did not include
either the spade or the rope on their seizure list.
The police only arrested one of the attackers, but he posted bail after sixty days. Biswas’ wife
asked the police to arrest the other attackers, but the police refused and threatened to arrest her
if she continued bothering them.
One of the attackers was known to be keeping in touch with the Haroa PS. The other attackers
have threatened Biswas’ life many times, but the police are unwilling to provide her with protection.

On 3 June 2005, victim Amrita Das’ family paid a Rs. 200,000 dowry to Das’ in-laws. Das’ inlaws
requested more money and consequently did not provide Das with proper food or allow the
couple to be intimate. Das’ family was unsuccessful in brokering a resolution with Das’ in-laws.
Das’ in-laws assaulted her when they were dissatisfied with the gifts Das gave them during
Durga Puja. Das’ family went to the Behala PS but did not lodge a complaint because they still
had hopes of reaching a resolution. Some locals were able to secure a promise from Das’ inlaws
that they would stop assaulting Das.
