Victim(s) : Amrita Das
Perpetrator(s) : Inspector-in-Charge Bantra PS
Location : Howrah, Kolkata to Behala, Delhi
and Faridabad.
Date of incident : 03/06/2005 to 15/05/2006
On 3 June 2005, victim Amrita Das’ family paid a Rs. 200,000 dowry to Das’ in-laws. Das’ inlaws
requested more money and consequently did not provide Das with proper food or allow the
couple to be intimate. Das’ family was unsuccessful in brokering a resolution with Das’ in-laws.
Das’ in-laws assaulted her when they were dissatisfied with the gifts Das gave them during
Durga Puja. Das’ family went to the Behala PS but did not lodge a complaint because they still
had hopes of reaching a resolution. Some locals were able to secure a promise from Das’ inlaws
that they would stop assaulting Das.
