On 31 May, Mafia Bewa went to the PS to collect a duplicate copy. However, she learnt that the
police had not initiated any case against Sahin or Lalu Mondal following her complaint of 28 May
2007. Rather, the police had altered her original complaint.
On 1 June 2007, Sahin Mondal was produced before the local Magistrate Court at Berhampore
in accordance with a case u/s 448/354/306 IPC (trespass, assault or criminal force to a woman
with intent to outrage her modesty, abetment of suicide).

Lalu Mondal has stated that Sahin Mondal was not involved Shilpi Khatun’s death, which was the
outcome of a quarrel with Mafia Bewa.
MASUM has noted that Sahin Mondal was not produced before a court within 24 hours of his
arrest.

Case Details:
Victim Smt. Sima Sardar was married to Surajit Sardar in April 2005. After that, Surajit Sardar
and his family physically and mentally abused her.
On 14 and 15 September 2006, Surajit Sardar and his mother Rita Sardar physically assaulted
Sima Sardar, so she ran away with her child to the house of her father, Tarak Nath Das. Tarak
Nath Das took Sima Sardar to the hospital and went to file a complaint with the Ultadanga PS
against Surajit and Rita Sardar. However, the Duty Officer would not receive his complaint.

After a few days, Surajit and Rita Sardar came to Tarak Nath Das’s house and took Sima Sardar
back to their house.
On 5 March 2007 at around 9.00am, when the abuse became unbearable, Sima Sardar
consumed kerosene and went senseless.
At 1.30pm, Tarak Nath Das arrived at Surajit Sardar’s house and saw that Sima Sardar was
unconscious. He went to Ultadanga PS to lodge a complaint.
Surajit Sardar had Sima Sardar admitted to the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata.
