Case Details:
On 23 July 2007, following a quarrel and while Jayanta Mondal was not at home, victim Jayanta
Montal’s daughter-in-law, Pushpa Montal, suddenly went to the Sankrail PS and lodged a
complaint against Jayanta Mondal’s family. Jayanta Mondal’s family asked Pushpa Montal
repeatedly to keep peace in the family, but she refused.
Later that day, officers from Sankraul PS arrived at Jayanta Mondal’s house and asked to see
her, but she was not at home. The officers instructed Jayanta Mondal’s wife, Sumitra Mondal,
to tell him to appear at the station the next day.
The next day at around 1.30pm, Jayanta Mondal returned home, learned of the police visit, and
went to the station. There, the Second PO asked him about Pushpa Montal’s complaint.
Jayanta Mondal denied all of Pushpa Montal’s allegations. The PO responded by slapping
Jayanta Mondal twice and threatening him. Jayanta Mondal felt insulted and was speechless.
On 26 July 2007, Jayanta Mondal returned to the station. There, he met with the officer in charge
and told him what had happened. The officer apologised on behalf of the Second PO.
Jayanta Mondal also visited the ASP and told him about the Second PO’s actions. The ASP
apologised, and rebuked the PO over the telephone in Jayanta Mondal’s presence.
