On 15 November 2006, Md. Sayab Ali Mondal went to the Jalangi PS, Murshidabad, to lodge his complaint; however, OC Somnath Banerjee threw away his complaint. The Duty Officer stated that he could do nothing if the OC did not accept Md. Sayab Ali Mondal’s complaint. Gopen Sharma assisted Md. Sayab Ali Mondal in contacting the ASP, Murshidabad. The ASP subsequently directed the Jalangi PS to accept Md. Sayab Ali Mondal’s complaint. However, the Duty Officer of Jalangi PS still refused to accept the complaint. On 28 June 2007, Golam Gauth Seikh, Tiarul Seikh, and others (all of Jot Kani village) beat Sudev in a property dispute. At 9.00pm, Sudev filed a complaint at the Domkal PS before receiving treatment at Domkol Sub- Divisional Hospital. However, the police and Sudev’s attackers implicated him in another police case instead. Annual Report on Torture 2007 On 6 July 2007 at about 1.00am, when Sudev was not at home, SI Shakhawat Hussein arrived at his house with four PCs. There was no female police escort. The officers insulted Sudev’s wife; she could not convince them that she did not know Sudev’s whereabouts. The police then ransacked Sudev’s house; they destroyed tiles, fans, household articles, and other articles. The police also misbehaved with the female family members. Sudev’s wife filed complaints with the SP, Berhampore, Murshidabad, and with the District Magistrate, Murshidabad. No action was taken, despite that a story about the incident was published in a leading daily newspaper.
Three eyewitnesses – Nidhu Bhusan Mondal, Bidhan Chandra Mondal, and Sanat Mondal – have corroborated the reports of Sudev’s family. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Domkal has denied that the incident happened. Sudev’s family currently lives in fear and insecurity.
