Annual Report on Torture
2007
Case Details:
Victim Jinnat Ali Molla lives in Kumarpur village, where he has his own paddy field.
Beside his field, Ejajul Mondol and Rabi Mondol, supporters of the CPI(M) party,
cultivate another paddy.
On 11 February 2007, Ejajul Mondol and Rabi Mondol took water from Jinnat Ali
Molla’s field for their own by digging a hole. Jinnat Ali Molla noticed their actions and
closed the hole. Shortly after, Ejajul Mondol and Rabi Mondol made another hole at
a different location. A dispute ensued.
Ejajul Mondol went to the Jalangi PS and lodged a complaint of murder against
Jinnat Ali Molla. An officer from the station arrived and arrested Jinnat Ali Molla.
On 12 February 2007 in the morning, Rejaul Karim of Kumarpur village went to
Jalangi PS and spoke on Jinnat Ali Molla’s behalf. Officer-in-Charte Somnath Banerjee
thus released Jinnat Ali Molla.
Enmity between Jinnat Ali Molla and Ejajul Mondol escalated.
On 15 May 2007, while Jinnat Ali Molla was in a bus en route to Baharampur, police
from Jalangi PS arrested him again. At the station, he was beaten before being sent
to Lalbag court and charged with a false case under the Arms Act.
Jinnat Ali Molla was detained for ninety days.
Local villagers have stated that SI Rajat Das of Raninagar PS demanded Rs. 25,000
from Ahad Molla and Sainul Molla of Kumarpur village in exchange for discharging
Jinnat Ali Molla from jail and dropping the case.
The SI asserted that Kumarpur village was not within the territorial jurisdiction of his
PS, and that Jinnat Ali Molla’s case was not connected with any previous disputes.
