All of the victims are residents of Nainan village.
On 3 June 2007 in the morning, a longstanding controversy regarding the construction of a road
in the Seikhpara area was resolved. However, that afternoon, when the victims were passing by
the road, some drunken people attacked them with sharp and heavy weapons.
The victims went to Mograhat PS, injured and bleeding. The police took them to the Mograhat
Hospital. The condition of Jahangir Seikh was particularly critical, so he was hospitalized at
Diamond Harbour Hospital.
The police visited the site of the incident to conduct an enquiry, but they took no step against the
attackers.
The victims returned to the station to lodge a complaint in the form of an FIR. There, they found
their attackers, who threatened not to let them enter the village if they filed an FIR. The police
witnessed these threats, but did nothing.
On 6 June 2007, the police arrested some of the attackers, but released them the next day on
personal release bonds.
The police have not filed any case against the attackers.
OC Debashish Chakraborty has stated that the victims were too afraid to lodge an FIR. However,
when asked why he had not taken any steps against the attackers, he denied the incident and
refused to divulge anything more.
