On 27 October 2006, Bonick’s famly went to the court and learned that the police had charged<br />

Bonick with selling cannabis near the No. 9 Tank on 25 October 2007, contrary to s. 20(b) of the<br />

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act 1987,. The judge remanded Bonick to jail.<br />

Bonick’s family is unclear how Bonick could have been selling cannabis on 25 October 2007<br />

when he was taken into police custody on 22 October 2007.<br />

Case Details:<br />

Victim Raben Bairagi is a rag picker. On 10 May 2007, at around<br />

10:00am, constable Aashidul Haque arrested Bairagi without any<br />

reason and Bairagi was imprisoned at Baranager PS. .<br />

On the same day, Bairagi was able to tell his arrest story to a factfinding<br />

member of MASUM. Inspector-In-Charge Sudip Roy<br />

became angry at the presence of a MASUM fact-finder in the PS<br />

and consequently threatened to implicate Bairagi in a serious<br />

case so that he would be unable to post bail. Bairagi was also told<br />

by Baranager PS police officer that he would be sent to jail if he was seen again in the locality.<br />

Bairagi was ultimately charged in a petty case and fined Rs. 50.<br />
