In August 2006, Jalangi PS SI Swapan Saha impounded Sajedur Rahaman’s tractor and
demanded Rs. 15,000. Sajedur Rahaman refused to pay, so the SI threatened to reduce the
tractor to junk.
Sajedur Rahaman filed a complaint at the CJM Court. The SI responded by threatening to teach
Sajedur Rahaman a lesson in the future.
On 26 September 2007, at around 12.00am, SI Utpal Das arrested Ayub Nabi, Sajedur
Rahaman’s brother. En route to the Jalangi PS, the SI beat Ayub Nabi.
SI Das also came to Sajedur Rahaman’s house when Rahaman was not there. The SI kicked
Rahaman’s wife, Supia Bibi, in the back. The SI also physically assaulted Jinnat Neeha and
Echhahaque Seikh, Sajedur Rahaman’s parents. SI Das also verbally abused the family.
Sajedur Rahaman has since absconded, fearing continuous threats from the police.
On 12 September 2007, the police registered a case against Sajedur Rahaman, alleging that
Rahaman tried to burn one Rejina Bibi contrary to ss. 498A/307/34 IPC (attempted murder and
cruelty).
The victims’ repeated complaints to the District Magistrate (Murshidabad) and Sub-Divisional
Police Officer (Domkol) have received no response.

Case Detail:
Victim Babusona Debnath works as a carpenter. He learned that his neighbour Rekha Shaw
was operating a liquor den in her home, and decided to object. He asked Rekha Shaw to shut
down the bar, as it attracted rowdies.
On 8 September 2006 at 2.00pm, a team of police from Ghola PS barged into Babusona
Debnath’s house and took him to the station.
In the police lock-up, the officers wrapped Babusona Debnath, kicked him, and slapped him.
The next morning, the police took Babusona Debnath to Panihati General Hospital for a medical
check-up, after threatening him not to say anything about his abuse.
The police then transferred Babusona Debnath to the Barrackpore Court, where he obtained
bail.
