Case details:<br />
Victim Sunita Shaw lived with her husband’s family in Howrah District, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Bengal</strong>. Shaw’s inlaws<br />
regularly abused her, and accused her of having provided too small a dowry.<br />
On 25 July 2005, Shaw’s husband and his family burned Shaw by pouring kerosene on her and<br />
lighting a matchstick on her. She suffered burns on ninety-eight percent of her body.<br />
On 26 July 2005, Sunita’s brother filed a written complaint at the Golabari PS (Case No. 179/05,<br />
dated 26 July 2005), under ss. 498A/326/34 IPC. IO Mominul Islam did not investigate key<br />
witnesses, seize important documents, or arrest the alleged perpetrators. Instead, IO Islam filed<br />
a final declaration on Shaw’s behalf, to which he affixed Shaw’s thumbprint. The final declaration<br />
was written in <strong>Bengal</strong>i despite Shaw’s mother tongue being Hindi.<br />
The final declaration claimed that Shaw’s kitchen stove spontaneously exploded.<br />
On 28 July 2005, Sunita died from her injuries.<br />
