Jhumur Naskar had a relation with Ashoke Baisna. The two wanted to marry each other, but Jhumur Naskar’s family, including her maternal uncle, strongly objected. On 14 February 2006, Jhumur Naskar escaped her family and married Ashoke Baisna. The two stayed together at Subhasgram. Jhumur Naskar’s family lodged a missing person complaint at Jainagar PS. On 19 February 2006, the SI called Jhumur Naskar’s father to the station in order to collect his signature on the missing person complaint. Jhumur Naskar and her father went to the station. At the station, the SI asked Jhumur Naskar’s father to bring him some sweets. While Jhumur Naskar’s father was out purchasing the sweets, the SI raped Jhumur Naskar. Jhumur Naskar’s parents both pressured her to forget what happened. Rekha Panja filed complaints at Baranagar PS many times, all were ignored. On 4 March 2007, Madan Mohan Panja also attempted to file a complaint at Baranagar PS, but the POs refused to give him the General Diary Entry Number. Mr. Panja sent a copy of the complaint to SP, Barasat, North 24 Parganas. Mr. Panja currently is on leave because he has lost sight in his right eye. A sex worker named Champa @ Bristi (who was well known to the BSF officers, having visited India several times before with no passport) offered Asha Beguma a suitable job in India. Asha Beguma agreed. On 7 June 2007 at around 7.00pm, Asha Begum was among 6 persons crossing the border into India. Asha Begum and Champa were caught and brought to a temporary BSF shelter. A BSF constable dragged Asha Beguma outside in front of other BSF personnel and raped her. An officer of the BSF intelligence wing (DIB) arrived, directed that Asha Beguma receive a medical check-up, and lodged a complaint with the Raninagar PS. Asha Beguma was taken to a primary health centre and then to the station. With the help of local police, BSF personnel managed to suppress the rape charge. Further, acting on a complaint by the BSF, the Raninagar PS filed a charge (Case No. 109, dated 08.06.07) against Asha Beguma and Champa u/s 14(A)(B) of the Foreigners Act. Under the order of SDPO (Domkal), Asha Beguma was sent to the Beharampur District Hospital under police custody, where Dr. S.B. Kanjilal recorded that Asha was not raped. On 9 June 2007, Asha Beguma and Champa were sent to the court of ACJM (Lalbagh), from which they were remanded to judicial custody.
