Case Details:
Victim Kartick Das, age 22, was engaged in a long term dispute with his neighbor over some
land.
Das attempted to file a complaint against his neighbor with the Bishnupur PS but the police
refused. Das then planned to take the matter to court and lodge a FIR. However, his neighbor
learned of Das’ plans and, on 24 May 2007, the neighbor took the preemptive step of lodging his
own FIR against Das with the Bishnupur PS.
On 29 August 2007, around 9:00pm, three Bishnupur PS police officers entered Das’ house and
forcefully took him to the Bishnupur PS. The police officers severely beat Das with a baton. The
police officers also beat Das’ mother and struck her to the ground.
On 30 August 2007, at around 2:00pm, the police produced Das and his mother to Alipur court.
The police registered a complaint dated 24 May 2007 against Das alleging rape and cheating.

On 20 May 2007, victim Lalu Das, age 26 participated in a protest rally. The protest was
conducted at the ground of New Ujjal Sangha in Bajemelia, Singur, Hoogly and included 1,000
other people. Armed police were present.
