Victim Jhumur Naskar, age 17, was raised at her maternal uncle’s house in Chatra, within the
jurisdiction of the Jainagar PS.
Naskar’s family, including her maternal uncle, strongly objected to the man she wanted to
marry. On 14 February 2006, Naskar escaped her family and got married. She and her
husband lived together at Subhasgram.
Naskar’s family lodged a missing person complaint with Jainagar PS.
On 15 February 2006, SI Swarup Prakash Dhara arrested Naskar and her husband at
Subhasgram. He released them only upon their payment of Rs. 4,000.
On 19 February 2006, SI Dhara called Naskar’s father to the station in order to collect his
signature on the missing person complaint. Naskar and her father went to the station.
At the station, SI Dhara asked Naskar’s father to bring him some sweets. While Naskar’s father
was purchasing the sweets, the SI Dhara raped Naskar.
