Debendra Lal Biswas called the police from the Baisnabghata Investigating Center, but the police<br />

arrested him instead of the assailants. At the police station, officers tortured Debendra Lal Biswas<br />

for thirty days, demanding that he produce his son at the station.<br />

Puspalata Biswas was locked in her own house for thirteen days. On 25 August 2006, she<br />

escaped and began to live at her relatives’ house.<br />

After their release, Dhiraj Biswas’s parents lived separately, fearing to return home. On 18<br />

and 19 August 2006, Debendra Lal Biswas lodged a complaint with the SP, South 24<br />

Parganas.<br />

Complaints were also lodged with the SP, the SHRC (<strong>West</strong> <strong>Bengal</strong>), the Chief Secretary, the<br />

Secretary Home (Police) Department, and the DGP.<br />

Dhiraj Biswas filed a divorce suit at Alipore Court.<br />

Debendra Lal Biswas filed a criminal case against Radha Biswas’s family at Alipore Court for<br />

theft, criminal trespass, mischief, and forming an unlawful assembly (Case No. C-5223/06, dated<br />

18.09.2006, u/s 323/448/427/380/147/148/504/506/34 IPC); he also filed a case against Arunabha<br />

Das of Baisnavghata Investigating Centre for extortion and illegal detention (Case No. C-6475/06,<br />

dated 18.09.2006, u/s 342/504/506/384 IPC).<br />

No action has been taken on any of these complaints.<br />

Dhiraj Biswas has had to leave his house permanently.<br />

Victim Dipa Biswas was married to Niranjan Biswas on 8 December 2001. Her family paid<br />

Niranjan’s a handsome dowry.<br />

After one month of marriage, Niranjan Biswas and his family members started demanding more<br />

dowry. As Dipa Biswas’s family failed to satisfy their demand, they physically and psychologically<br />

abused her.
