Bhowmick was in a relationship with a woman and her parents wanted Bhowmick to<br />

marry her as soon as possible.<br />

On 2 January 2007 at 9:00am, the woman’s parents demanded that Bhowmick’s<br />

father make Bhowmick marry Saha immediately. They insisted that Bhowmick and<br />

his father sign a piece of blank paper. Bhowmick’s father said that he would consent<br />

to his Bhowmick’s marriage only when Bhowmick was settled in his job.<br />

At 11.30am, a team of police officers from Khardaha PS, led by SI Mukharjee, came to<br />

Bhowmick’s house with some members of the local ruling party. They arrested<br />

Bhowmick without stating a reason. The SI told Bhowmick’s father to produce a letter<br />

from the local ruling party if he wanted to release his son.<br />

The police brought Bhowmick to the station with the woman. At 4:30pm, the police<br />

made Bhowmick and the woman sign a blank piece of paper.<br />

A marriage registrar from Barrackpore Court came to the station. Some locals who<br />

were present forcefully registered the marriage Bhowmick’s and Saha’s marriage. .<br />

The next day, at around 9.30am, Bhowmick’s father learned that Bhowmick’s dead<br />

body was found at the Palta Railway Station.<br />

Bhowmick’s siste lodged a complaint at the Khardaha PS. The police deny having<br />

received this complaint. When Bhowmick’s body was brought to the station, the<br />

officers lodged an FIR.<br />

A post-mortem report dated 3 January 2007 showed that Sujoy sustained a grave<br />

injury to the back of his head.<br />
