The perpetrators, Sattar Mondal, Azi Mondal, Abu Mondal, Tojan Mondal, Patu Mondal and Munchhar Mondal, first tried to bribe Hanif Mondal to stop the reporting. When that failed, the perpetrators attacked Hanif on 22 nd June 2007. Hanif’s wife and neighbours found Hanif beaten and unconscious. Hanif was taken to the hospital. Hanif’s wife attempted to lodge a complaint to the Jalangi PS, but the police only filed a General Diary entry. Mr. Somenath Banerjee, O.C, and Mr. Swapan Saha, 2 nd Officer verbally abused Hanif and his wife when they tried to file the complaint. Hanif’s wife also lodged a complaint with the CJM Court, but no action followed. Thus emboldened, the perpetrators continued to threaten Hanif and his family. The police have since registered two General Diary entries against Hanif’s two sons. Hanif and his family live in constant fear of being murdered by the perpetrators. FF Code : W.B./MON(S. They worked at a factory manufacturing illegal firecrackers. They resided at Bedo Narayan Para, and their families were certified as Below the Poverty Line (BPL). They were students of the National Child Labour Project School.
On 28 August 2007 at around 11.00am, the three victims were badly burnt in circumstances that remain unclear. Saruf Ali died shortly thereafter. Hasan Ali and Sahana Katun were suffering with 80-100% burn injuries. Villagers moved the victims to the BN Bose Hospital at Barrackpore by the villagers; the police, who arrived three hours later (despite that the police station is only 3km away) did nothing. At 12.00pm, Sahana Katun died. At 4.00pm, Hasan Ali died. The Barasat police registered a case of unnatural death (Case No. 372) and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. Then the police registered a case (Case No. 573/07, u/s 286 and 304 IPC). At 12.00am, the police raided the village and arrested several innocent persons who were not connected with the incident. During their raid, the police ransacked the houses of many poor villagers and claimed that they had seized many explosives. The police have still made no effort to identify the leader of the explosives industry. It has been alleged that the police have done little because they received bribes from those who violate the explosives laws. However, one Julfikar from Ranaghat was arrested nearly 80km from Bedo Narayan Para. The victims’ families have still been unable to locate the victims’ BPL cards.
