Very soon after her marriage, Khatun’s in-laws threatened to expel her from their home. In January 2007, Khatun’s husband was drunk and beat Khatun until she hade bruises all over her body. Khatun’s husband choked Khatun by squeezing her neck in an attempt to kill her. On 3 May 2007, Khatun’s in-laws badly beat her and expelled her from their house. On 3 May 2007, Khatun attempted to lodge a complaint with the Golbari PS but was refused. On the same day, she lodged a General Diary entry with the Bankra Outpost. On 3 March 2007, Dutta attempted to lodge a complaint with the Murshidabad PS Inspector-in-Charge, but it was only recorded as General Diary entry. On 20 March 2007, the neighbor and his family attacked Dutta’s house with sharp weapons and sticks. The neighbor’s son attacked Minu Dutta with a sharp weapon and injured both of Minu’s
hands. Minu fell to the ground, where another member of the neighbor’s family continued to beat her with a stick. Minu received a serious injury to her head. Minu was admitted to Lalbagh S.D. Hospital and received stitches for the hand wounds. Dutta’s son lodged a complaint with the Murshidabad PS. The police registered the case on 21 March 2007. Dutta’s neighbors, along with some local leaders, and Dr. Bibhas Mukharjee of Lalbagh S.D. Hospital conspired to discharge Minu from the hospital before her treatment was complete. Murshidabad PS police officers only arrested Dutta’s neighbors, despite that fact that his relatives had been substantially involved in the attacks. Murshidabad PS SI and Investigating Officer Prabir Kumar Dutta arranged for the neighbor to be released on bail after a few days. Since his release, the neighbor and his family continue to issue threats to Dutta and his family. Several subsequent complaints filed with the Murshidabad PS have not been pursued by the police. She was a widow. She works as a government employee. Champa Das’s brother Sukumar Chandra Das desired to sieze the property bequeathed to Champa Das. Sukumar Chandra Das thus created trouble for Champa Das, even disconnecting the electricity supply to her house. Champa Das lodged complaints with the Chairman of Municipality, the Local Ward Commissioner, and the Ward Committee. Sukumar paused for a few days from harassing Champa Das. Champa Das’s older brother and parents persuaded her to remarry. She did so on 17 November 2005. After her marriage, Sukumar Chandra Das began to harass Champa Das again.
