Case Details:
Victim Mamata Mukherjee, age 22, was deserted by her husband and now lives with her
mother Rita Ghosh and brother Karthik Ghosh at Dey Bagan. She works as a domestic maid.
On 28 November 2007 at 6.00pm, two persons went to Mamata Mukherjee’s house and
informed her Rita and Karthik Ghosh that she had stolen 100g of gold ornaments. The persons
took the victim’s mother and brother to Thakur Bari’s house, where Mamata Mukherjee was
working. The men of the house beat Mamata Mukherjee in front of her mother and brother.
Then the people took Mamata Mukherjee to Sreerampore PS.
At 12.00am, Rita and Karthik Ghosh returned home. Suddenly, four police officers came with
Mamata Mukherjee to the house and searched it. They did not find anything, but still took Rita
and Karthik Ghosh to the station and detained them.
On 29 November 2007 at 2.30am, the police released Rita and Karthik Ghosh. They kept
Mamata Mukherjee in the lock-up. No arrest memo was issued.

On 1 December 2007, the police registered a case (Case No. 226/07) against Mamata
Mukherjee. They sent her to the Sreereampore Court – much more than 24 hours after her
arrest.
Public Prosecutor Saroj Ghosh has stated that Mamata Mukherjee was caught in the act of
committing theft.
