Victim Sakuntala Devi belongs to a scheduled caste. She lives in Kolkata.
On 9 July 2007, Devi’s husband was scheduled to post bail from Alipur Correctional Home.
However, the Anti-Rowdy Squad of the Lalbazar Detective Department demanded payment of
Rs. 50,000 for his release. The officers warned Devi that, if she did not pay the money, they
would falsely implicate her husband in other criminal cases. Devi could not afford to make the
payment, and her husband remained at Alipur Correctional Home.
On 18 July 2007, Devi and some advocates were able to secure her husband’s release. As
Devi, her husband, and the advocates were driving home, police officers from the Lalbazar
Detective Department stopped their car, pulled the passengers from the car, and severely beat
all of them. Devi was badly injured and admitted to a hospital for the entire day. The police also
inappropriately touched Devi.
