On 26 October 2007, victim Abul Sarkar and his wife had a divorce.
Sarkar’s former brother-in-law attempted to lodge a complaint with the Jalangi PS against
Sarkar with the intention of dispossessing Sarkar from his property. However, the police did not
register the complaint.
Later, Sarkar’s former brother-in-law trespassed on Sarkar’s property and, in the presence of
Jalangi PS ASI Somenath Singh, beat Sarkar with a wooden log and other weapons. Sarkar’s
former brother-in-law also took possession of Sarkar’s property in front of ASI Singh.
Sarkar attempted to lodge a complaint with the Jalangi PS, but Jalangi PS SI Tuhin Biswas
refused to accept the complaint. SI Biswas threatened Sarkar and detained him for three to four
hours.

Victim Arati was married to Dipak Maity. From the day of their marriage, she was abused by her
husband and his relatives, who demanded more dowry from her.
On 11 th November 2007, Arati Maity left her home and did not return until late at night.
